Beauty Review: Suave Humectant Shampoo and Conditioner

The Budget Beauty Babe sees how well Suave products stack up to their pricier, brand name competitors. —BB

The folks over at Suave have a new campaign targeted at recessionistas everywhere, women who are looking to cut back on expenses without cutting back on their lifestyles. Suave calls it "Suavenomics," and the premise is that you can save money by switching from more expensive brands to their Suave equivalents.

Could this be true? Are Suave products just as good as their more expensive counterparts? We decided to put their Humectant Shampoo and Conditioner to the test, compared to Nexxus Luxurious Moisturizing Shampoo and Humectress Ultimate Moisturizing Conditioner.

Suave says that their product "deeply moisturizes as well as Nexxus." We found that it did! These products are not identical, not by any means, but they do both have the same results. In order to test the products we divided our hair in half, and tested Suave on one side and Nexxus on the other. Both sides of the head were moisturized and soft, however, they weren’t completely identical during the entire process. The Nexxus felt richer and softer in the shower while applying, and it also lathered more, but it took longer to rinse off. The Suave went on easy, and rinsed off quickly and cleanly.

So while the end result was the same, the process was different. We actually decided we liked the Suave better; in fact one of our testers really despised the sensation that they couldn’t wash the Nexxus off of their hair. We also preferred the Suave scent. So in these times, we’ve decided we’re going to be using the Suave. How about you, have you switched to lower cost beauty products to save money? Or have you been buying Suave (or another similar brand) all along?

I'm a fan of Suave! You really can't beat the prices. I enjoy their coconut shampoo and conditioner. I often use the conditioner as a shampoo, and it leaves my hair so soft! My husband also likes their sport body wash for men. Great post!

I use the Sleek shampoo and conditioner in the orange bottle by Suave religiously... I try other products but I always come back to it haha. They make great products!

i've always hand a bottle of suave handy! i actually had a professor back in college who worked as a marketing analyst years ago, and in a blind test of both high and low-end, the shampoo/conditioner brand customers were most happiest with was suave!

I've actually been using this lately... it was on sale and I was fed up paying $40 for shamp/cond so I picked it up. I really like it!

I've been a long-time user of salon products, but the last time I needed hair care, I decided to go out on a limb and bought Suave Professionals Damage Care Shampoo and Conditioner (I color my hair and always use either a damage or color care shampoo). It's hard to beat a price of $1.97! I really like both products and wish they came in bigger bottles!

I agree 100% I love the Suave products. I have crazy thick hair so I like that I can wash it out much easier than Nexxus. I also think the Nexxus makes me have dandruff after a few days, faster than Suave does. Yeah, I wash my hair only every 3-4 days, I'm gross :-)

I used to use that when I lived in New Zealand. Thanks for reminding me, I bet the yummy smell will bring me back some years!

Because of this I went and got this stuff. I used to use Nexxus and the conditioner would NEVER come out. I love this stuff and it's SO much cheaper.
