If it's something timeless, such as my Ray-Ban aviators, then it is worth the $100+. Trendy styles such as the round glasses that are ubiqutous this season warrant less money, in my opinion.
I have quite a few pairs of sunglasses and actually I do own the pair pictured above and I absolutely love them. I have a pair of Marc by Marc Jacobs aviators and gigantic pair of Gucci sunglasses that I spent a truckload on, but I love them a lot too. So, I suppose it depends. I just feel like sunglasses are an investment and I intend to keep mine forever
Do you notice a difference in quality with the Guccis? I bought a pair of Marc by Marc Jacobs sunglasses on Rue La La recently, but returned them because I couldn't distinguish the quality from any of my cheaper pairs. Maybe they would have held up better had I kept them, but like other readers, I tend to mistreat mine (toss 'em in a big tote with lots of crap) or lose them
I lose sunglasses so easily so I rarely spend over $40 on them. I would shell out more for a designer pair (like Prada) but it would still have to be under $100 (used or discount). Just can't justify the expensive, especially with so many great knock-offs out there - no one would think it's real anyway!
I have a talent for mangling sunglasses in new and unique ways (dropping them on rocky cliffs, crushing them under my comforter, slamming them in the closet door...) as well as leaving them in places I will never again return to (taxi cabs, hotel rooms, beaches). The verdict, therefore, is under $30 - and even that may be a stretch. Besides, one of my favorite pairs cost me only $8. (I have, however, had to buy them twice after the first pair was left on top of my car as I drove away from the gas station...)

I will usually pay about $35 - $95 for designer shades at discount stores and have managed to keep them in pretty good shape...my Marc by Marc Jacobs that I found at Marshals for $35 were my favorite find though...had them for about a year now and they are a basic, timeless style, not too trendy. My least favorite pair in that price range were the $85 Juicy's I got at Loehmann's a year and a half ago...they stretched out and started falling off my face all the time...really annoying.
I once bought a pair of $150 Samantha style Coach sunglasses that I absolutely adored and wore every day for almost a year and a half...until the day I had them on top of my head and they straight up disintegrated! No joke, they fell apart into tiny pieces and fell off my head...I have NO idea how or why it happened...they had NO damage to them whatsoever, I always put them in the case when I wasn't wearing them, took care of them and they self-destructed! I didn't try to return them to Coach, they were hardly recognizable once they fell apart...but I'll never buy Coach glasses again!
Nikki,
That worries me about the Coach glasses. I just bought a pair of Phoebe's from TJ Maxx for $60.00 that I love. So, I'm hoping these don't do the same as yours.
I bought them in '06 so hopefully they've gone up in terms of quality since then...I also hope that mine was a unique experience. Good luck with yours, the Phoebe's are really cute!
Unlike Angie, I usually splurge on accessories like designer handbags and sunglasses. I prefer to have a wider variety of clothes - even though they may be cheaper - and a few key accessories. I got a great pair of Ferragamo sunglasses this summer at an airport sale which were about 160 Euros and I absolutely love them! Don't think I'd fork out 500+ Euros for D&G ones, though.
I don't fool around with my eyes...I pay the big bucks for the good lens and designer shades. I do take care of them using the case whenever I'm not wearing them. Right now I wear Revo aviators but am in the market for a new pair of dark lens.
I tried UO shades just for a change of style. Cute but way too cheap and plasticy. I may hit up Ross, Loehmann's and/or TJ Maxx at the suggestions above . I've tried to be patient and wait for the sample site's to come up with some sales but so far ziltch.
The most I’ve ever spent on a pair of sunglasses is $40 – and that was because I was in a different country and didn’t quite realize how much I’d paid (in the dollar equivalent) until after my purchase. Otherwise I wouldn’t have paid that much. Sunglasses are probably at the bottom of my priority list of accessories, but that might be because I live in a country (Russia) that doesn’t see the sun too often.
That said, I love my $40 sunglasses and still wear them (in the summer) three years later.

Thanks for looking out for me!
