Oh I love Amanda Bynes! I'll for sure be checking out this fashion line when it comes out--you can't beat the price! Although, as much as I like Amanda, seems like most anyone can get there own fashion line these days...what's with that?
It certainly seems like every A-E list celeb and their mother (ehem, Beyonce) has a fashion line these days! Basically it's all a question of marketing and $$$. People buy celebrity endorsed clothing. We're not so cynical as to say this is always a bad thing--we take it on a case by case basis.
Retailer Zara may be the last bastion of hope for clothes that may be designer-inspired, but you won't find celebrities designing their clothes (at least not for now): Check out this article in Reuters: http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20070703/en_nm/inditex_dc
I think the really odd part is how the people ACTUALLY designing these budget lines never get any credit, and instead a celebrity is called in to claim the work! From an artist's viewpoint I'm sick of this happening! How about the actresses/singers/models stick to what they do, and the designers/artists get credit for what they do! (P.S., i like Amanda too, its nothing personal! haha)
that's because if 'Super-Designer-with-no-name-recognition" designs a lovely line of clothing, it won't sell as well as if some famous person adds their name to it. the advertising world sells fantasies: if you wear Elizabeth Arden make-up, you will look like Catherine Zeta-Jones. If you wear Sarah Jessica Parker clothing, you will have her 'look,' and so on. smart shoppers can see through this but Madison Avenue is betting on the 90% of the general population that obviously can't.
saying that, in the late 70's Sophia Loren came out with a perfume. it wasn't that great but i bought it anyway because i saw her at Carson's in Chicago for the launch and i was so impressed by how gorgeous she looked in person, and how gracious she was as a person. so yes, names sell. however, if you're talented and want to break out in the fashion world, what's to stop you from selling your clothes as 'coco chanel II?' he he he
Food for thought: Luca Solca of the Bernstein consultancy says stars are a substitute for design, speed and quality. He compares firms that use them to athletes forced to take steroids to compete.
