Ask BB: How to Dress for San Francisco Summers

I am relocating this month to San Francisco from Washington, DC. Can you suggest what a young, mid-20-something girl needs to survive in the Bay Area for the upcoming climate change. I'm at a loss! —Hal

In San Francisco, as in any large city, you'll need comfortable walking shoes especially with all the steep hills. They are no joke! I'd recommend a comfortable cross-body bag or messenger bag for this reason, too.

Say bye-bye to the heat and humidity of D.C. (something I got experience during a summer-long internship). I've never lived in San Francisco but I remember the weather was beautiful in the summertime, albeit a tad unpredictable and much cooler than I had expected. Layering is essential, so always carry a cardigan, jean jacket, or blazer, especially in the evenings.

The whole San Francisco vibe is more conservative than say, L.A., but equally stylish in its own way. Lots of earth tones and comfortable urban trekkers who look smart and chic because they match their environment, so to speak. In a sense, this is good because you're moving from D.C. so with a few tweaks, you'll be blending-in in no time.

Below are 3 affordable outfit ideas to inspire you. Now I'll turn it over to my savvy readers: What will Hal need in her wardrobe for her move to San Francisco? If you live in SF, we'd love to hear your input.

Where are you living and working? SF has micro climates - check out the www.wunderground.com to see what I mean. Parts of town can be much windier/hotter/cooler depending where you are. The fog and the wind make a huge difference.

So yes, layers are great. Think cooler than DC - we rarely have days in the 80s and up. 70s are considered really warm and hot days are usually not humid. Shoes that you can walk in, especially for the hills. Rain gear is good for fall & winter. You won't really need super heavy winter gear but I'd keep warmer fall clothes until you actually move. Keep in mind - it doesn't get super cool but not all places have heat.

Also check in with you office before buying a lot of work gear. Many workplaces here are super casual - jean and t-shirts.

San Francisco is a lot less conservative than DC. Lots of people here wear hip casual / performance stuff. Nice jeans, comfy walking shoes.

glad to see you have jackets in each of these ensembles since it's inevitably cool in the city by the bay!

I agree with the first commenter, San Francisco never has one climate all day, it depends on which part of the city you're in and what time of day it is. The Mission is always quite a bit warmer than, say, the Embarcadero. I recommend getting a small umbrella that you can keep in your bag, because at some point, you will get caught in rain.

you should know more than anything that here in the bay area, we are privy to indian summers. thus, our more intense summer heat happens to fall in sept and oct, usually. in the actual summer, there are overcast days where jeans, light jackets and boots are still completely perfect and then there are days like today where everyone is bounding about in their comfy flat sandals (or flats depending on your office dress rules) and sweet, light dresses. BB is right about one thing HUGELY... layering is a must. most of my bags always have a large pashmina like scarf in them... in case. more often than not, SF is not one of those california summer places where you can spend the entire day without at least a light coat. it is always best to dress smartly. we're into efficiency without bulk and fashion forward without sparkle here in this city.

Jackets are must as BB pointed out...if I dont carry a jacket, I atleast make a point to carry a scarf. layering is a great help! and again if you are in corporate world..the office attire is pretty casual..pple usually wear jeans n tshirts/tops and keep it simple yet chic!

the great thing about living in SF is that people dont really care what you wear (not counting people you work for) jeans and a t-shirt totally work, leather jacket is a MUST! Absolute MUST for San Francisco. Durable and with comfy lining is recommended. Also invest in really comfortable shoes. There's a huge forever 21 on powell street that will have many budget friendly tops and bottoms.

if you want to wear a skirt, i'd invest in lots of cute tights and i really like the suggestion of having a messenger bag, those are sooooo handy! carry a pair of tights and a light sweater, probably cashmere just because it's lightweight and super warm.

layering is also a very good suggestion. eventually you get used to the fluctuating cold/wind/sunny warmth.

one thing my mom always suggested when i bought clothes was to buy outerwear that's bright (not obnoxiously) because it gets quite foggy at night, especially if you are in the outer districts. better to be seen than not =)

also, welcome to the best city in the world! ;-) enjoy being accepted for who you are and not being held down by "the man"

All 3 outfits look great. I've been to the bay area a numerous times and I do agree that the weather can be unpredictable and changes throughout the day. The second look is my favorite. I can't keep my eyes off the dress! The jacket is a must and it's a great choice to wear when it starts to get nippy.

First, I am so jealous of your move to San Fran. I have been trying to plan a trip out there all summer and have not been able to get the time.

Second, I love all of these outfits. So practical. I especially love the black dress in the second picture and the bag in the first.

Thanks ladies for all your help-ive been here 3 weeks already and still adjusting to the climate-you were all spot on about needing a jacket or scarf-i love all the ideas from BB and have added what I don't already have to my list for future shopping! Other then the fluxuating temps around town this city rocks and I'm glad to FINALLY be a native! Thanks again!

Flat riding boots and/or comfy flats are a must also :-)

#3 comment is right on the money. I visit the bay area once a year and always in June for some reason. I wore a sweater and light leather jacket the entire time I was there...when I was near the actual bay. However, as you travel further out, it is warm. But as #3 mentioned, you will have a foggy, cool, morning and by early afternoon, the weather is pleasantly warm in certain areas. Good luck, you will love the city and the people!

definitely have a jacket on hand. it is easier to use public transportation in sf and bus rides are mostly on time. have fun living in sf! i've been here all my life and love it!

Also, be careful about wearing skirts. The city is really windy. That's the biggest problem I have ~~ being blown away haha. Often my skirt ends up between my legs because of the wind pushing it back. : (
