Isaac Mizrahi's Fall 2010 runway show last week at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week was easily the highlight of my week. The energy of the audience, the excitement of the show, the live music, the fake snow, the clothes—everything came together to create an experience that had but one flaw: It was too short! But that's the nature of these live runway shows. Blink and you might miss it. Back to the clothes: The collection was classic Isaac. Fun, beautiful clothing with a twist. His show notes listed an eclectic mash-up of inspirations, from the great outdoors (albeit Central Park) to bag-lady chic to fairy princesses and beyond. Think Geoffrey L.L. Bean or Buffalo Bill Blass. I giggled in my seat as I read the program, knowing I was in for a treat.
Down the runway came a colorblocked coat and some minimalist separates. Momentum grew with a few quilted pieces including a strapless cocktail dress. There were toggle closures, fur-trimmed hoods worn as hats (no coat attached), backpacks, vests, anoraks and parkas. Colors like bright tomato red and mossy green appeared on a shaggy coat and cotton-candy like dress. Finally, evening looks came fluttering by embellished with sequins and swaths of tulle. It's tough to put into words what Isaac does so well with fabric, so watch the video and scroll down to see highlights from the show. Apologies for the video quality, it's not great, but seeing Isaac skip out onto the runway for the final bow makes it worthwhile. Priceless!
