Beauty Review: Psssssst Instant Dry Shampoo

Beauty Review: Psssssst Instant Dry Shampoo

What it is: Psssssst is the original dry shampoo for refreshing your style between shampoos (it was invented back in the '70s)

What it does: Psssssst Instant Dry Shampoo claims to refresh and rejuvenate hair by soaking up excess oil, removing product build-up and boosting volume. By shampooing less it saves hair from heat styling damage. Hair looks, feels and smells freshly shampooed. It also helps preserves hair color by shampooing less.

How to use it: Shake can well. Hold can 6" to 8" from hair. Lift sections of hair and lightly spray scalp and roots of each section. Fluff. Wait a few minutes, then brush hair well. Style hair as desired.

What I think: I've always been intrigued by the idea of dry shampoo but had never tried anything besides baby powder (shocking, I know), which isn't the best solution because it can end up making your hair look gray (and you smell like a baby's bottom.) So when I received my free sample of Psssssst, I was excited to test the results for myself. You can buy a 4 oz can of Psssssst for $6.99 at drugstores nationwide. My first attempt was a flop - I sprayed a bit on my roots, waited and brushed it out, and didn't notice any difference.

But on my second attempt, I decided to really apply a generous amount, diligently lifting smaller sections of hair and spraying a ton of the stuff on my scalp and roots until I'd covered my entire head. This time, it worked! It's not magical, but my hair looked noticeably "cleaner", brighter (it's blond, so it gets darker between shampoos), and more voluminous (again, my fine hair gets weighed down after a day or two of not washing.)

As the day progressed (I tested it in the morning), my hair remained noticeably "cleaner." It stayed soft to the touch, but kinda felt like it had product in it, like a light hair spray. Though the can says "unscented" my hair also retained a strong perfume scent which is not unpleasant, but I could do without. I also applied Psssssst outside on my deck because I didn't want to breathe it in. The ingredients give me pause: Propane, SD Alcohol 40, Aluminum Starch Octenylsuccinate, Butane, Isobutane, Cyclomethicone, Fragrance. Hmmm, doesn't sound too good although I am not a chemist and can not say with any certainty whether or not these ingredients are toxic. I imagine the concept is similar to dry cleaning your clothes but I'll need to research…

Anywho, Psssssst's effectiveness has piqued my curiosity and I look forward to testing out other dry shampoos on the market, preferably ones that at least claim to be non-toxic and such.

Do you use dry shampoos? Which would you recommend?

I always end up going back to Psssst! It is the cheapest and best I have. I really liked Jonathan's Refresh (I think that is what it was called? It isn't on the Sephora website any longer) and I like it, but it was too pricey for me.

Bastista dry shampoo works well but isn't as easy to find.

I recently bought the new Tresemme Fresh Start Waterless Foam Shampoo and it didn't seem to do a thing. I am going to try again this weekend though.

I have a friend that tried to convince me to use dry shampoo a few years ago, and was unfortunately in the bathroom with her when she sprayed it on herself and got lungs full of those toxins.

Also, those ingredients are incredibly flammable, so I would advise staying away from open flames.

I love the concept, but am not a fan of the chemicals.

I haven't had much success with dry shampoo but there are 2 products I have found that are pretty effective.
1. Ojon Revitalizing Mist - It's a leave-in conditioner that works as a toner and hair refresher. Also adds a nice, light scent to your hair.
2. Goth Juice Hair by Lush - It's a styling gel, but for some reason, it has really good re-styling properties. Didn't much care for it as a styling gel though.

I love this stuff! I've tried a couple of different ones because I felt like surely something newer would be better. NOPE. Pssst is the best!

I've also always gone back to Pssssst. I've tried a bunch of pricier ones (Oscar Blandi, which I found at my marshalls) and a bunch of other ones, but I actually think Psssssst works the best, especially for the money. I always keep it in my bathroom cupboard for the days when I'm too lazy to wash my hair...

I use Oscar Blandi.
I have used Ojon before, and it left my hair feeling like there was an overuse or product in it.
Oscar Blandi gives my hair a fresh pick me up. I also have thin hair, but a lot of it, so it gives it some volume, as well.
I've been using the product for going on 3 years.

the site states "Voted Best Dry Shampoo and Best Quick Fix by Allure magazine, it effectively soaks up oil, removes product build-up, and boosts volume"--- and it does this EXACTLY.

highly recommend it.

I love dry shampoo! I'm blonde, too, with thick thick hair, and it dries out so quickly if I was every day. I've always been faithful to Oscar Blandi (I love the light lemon scent!), but the other day I bought the Tresseme kind a previous commenter mentioned - it SUCKS! I got the kind for "oily, straight hair" even though my hair isn't really oily, the other kind was for curly hair -- it made my hair super dull and heavy/flat. GROSS! I honestly think it looked worst after I dry shampooed than before.

Work "by soaking up excess oil." I'm thinking they could use this in the gulf....

This!

I've used Rene Furterer Naturia dry shampoo (available at Sephora). It works well and doesn't contain any scary chemicals. Word of warning to brunettes like me, though: Brush your hair THOROUGHLY after applying it, or you'll end up with grayish streaks!

I've only tried Oscar Blandi, and hated it. It never really seemed to work for me. This sounds good, but those ingredients seem sketchy...

I use the Oscar Blandi as well and it's pretty good.

I've always been interested in dry shampoo, but always went the baby powder route myself, too. I actually use Wen Cleansing Conditioner to wash my hair and I can actually go a day, sometimes two, between washings since I've started using it. I've tried the Ojon Revitalizing Mist and it made my neck / skin super itchy and my hair just flopped. I know they have a dry shampoo also, I might check out Oscar Blandi.

In theory, dry shampoo is a killer idea. I had always wanted to try it too. I noticed you mentioned something about the ingredients potentially being toxic...you were on the right track. I did some research on the Cosmetics Safety Database and found this: Psssssst Dry Shampoo scores a 7 (high hazard) with ingredients linked to cancer, developmental/reproductive toxicity, allergies/immunology, neurotoxicity, organ toxicity and even more! Yikes! It's always good to research a product before you use it as there are MANY toxic beauty products out there.

I'm gonna have to try the Oscar Blandi when it comes to Canada this year.

As a greasy, greasy individual, I can tell you in all honesty that the Tresemme is pretty awful and has never worked on my hair.

I was recently introduced to dry shampoo myself. My brother-in-law's girlfriend always has perfect hair and she says her secret is the dry shampoo. She has been using it for years and she said her favorite is the Tresamme spray. I tried it myself and I have to say I am pleased with the results. I am blond and I have wavy/curly hair. The Tresamme foam that is supposed to be for my hair type did not work at all. The spray works great. The odor is strong at first, but it goes away. It really makes my curls look more defined and I really have a lot more volume. I love it!

I do see that my hair is "lighter" from the spray as others have said. BB your description was great and I look forward to your reviews of other dry shampoos in the future.

I use The All-Nighter Styling Powder--it's a bit pricey for the tiny bottle, but a little goes a looooong way and you can buy it in different shades to match your hair color. I love it!

I go five days between shampoos because I have A) dry, dry hair B) hard, hard water and C) I'm lazy as hell.

I've only tried two dry shampoos. Oscar Blandi is nice BUT you have to use a TON of it and for someone who uses it frequently, not just when I've forgotten to wash my hair...that isn't an option for me. I used it about three times before my ten dollar travel bottle was used up. It does smell better than the others I've sniffed though.
Dirty Secret by Tigi works well but it makes my hair rather stiff. You get this huge bottle that sounds like it has about half a bottles worth of product in it. The bottle is about 24 bucks I think so that is no good. Also, the bottle is defective as hell. I've had THREE bottles just start leaking pressure. They really need to work on the design.

I've just started using baby powder. You smell gross and it leaves you slightly too light but it beats the hell out of throwing money in the garbage.

i use batiste orignal dry shampoo that i got at planet beauty for $10.00 and it rocks! i have very fine hair that gets greasy if i don't wash it every day... there's a noticeable difference and i don't feel like there's a ton of product in it.

I use Bastiste, and you can find it at your local Sally Beauty for about $7. Often, they have bogo coupons, too. I find this brand to be the best value for the money, and they recently came out with a subtly rose scented version that I actually prefer to the unscented one.

Using baby powder is not a terrible idea especially if you're blond and dilligent about brushing the product through your hair. They do have powders that are available in lavender scent that would be a good alternative.

I haven't tried this, but all other brands have been a failure on my dark hair.

Lo-ove Psssssst! I used to use Rene Futrerer ($24 at Sephora!), which was fantastic, but I couldn't imagine using it if you weren't a blonde, as it is quite powdery. This stuff is great for all hair color types, which I know because my friend (a brunette) recommended it to me over a year ago. At $6 from Walgreens, this can't be beat price/quality-wise. :-)

Used this stuff back in the mid 70's when I was in High School. Grew up in a house, 1 bathroom and metal shower stall in basement. You took a bath 2-3 times a week, used this in between. Worked pretty well as I remember.

My mom used this in the 70's and so did I (as a child). When I started getting perms, I didn't need it so much and kind of forgot about it. Picked it up again in the 90's and have stuck with it, except for a period of time where it wasn't being manufactured - I freaked when that happened!!! I have very oily and fine hair so I actually use it right after I've washed my hair and finished styling it (before hairspray). It totally helps my hair from becoming so oily in the first place!
