Poll: Would You Wear Bondage Pumps?

In the April 2011 issue of Lucky Magazine, actress Zooey Deschanel said something that really resonated with me: "I'm not a bondage-pumps person."

My guess is that Zooey is referring to the latest crop of outerspace-high platform pumps made by designers like Christian Louboutin and Brian Atwood, worn by legions of celebrities from Jennifer Hudson to Emma Roberts.

I'm on Team Zooey: At some point, a heel reaches a tipping point where it becomes too high to be stylish, comfortable and aesthetically pleasing. It just starts to look wrong and awkward in my book. What about you?

THANK YOU! I love my heels, but really, when all I can find are 5 inch heels I can't help but get upset. I work in a pretty trendy office but I'm also in a male-dominated industry - I don't want to be wearing 5 inch heels to work!

These remind me of something Herman Munster would wear. I will never forget the day I was in the Versace store in Houston and a male sales person tried to get me to understand the aesthetic and commenting on how comfy the shoe is. Um...not just no, but heck no!!!!

I love heels and I am rarely without at least 3" on, but these cross a line that makes them no longer appropriate for office environments which is where I spend 71% of my time.

Using the term "bondage," I'd think she was referring to cage-style or gladiator heels/shoes/sandals. Either way, I'd wear neither cage styles nor these sky-high thangs. Uuuuuuuuuuugly.

The new Daf heels by C. Louboutin look so uncomfortable, I don't get how anyone could wear them and not want to chop their foot off a minute later. They are so ridiculously high and impractical. I know most high fashion is impractical, but these heels are just ridiculous and cartoonish. IMO, they look like cheap stripper heels, and you can always get those for like 1/10 of the price of these shoes.

Fetish would probably be more appropriate than "Bondage". Seeing as this style of platform isn't limited to BDSM, but the fetish community in general.

Regardless, I love this style and wish I owned a pair of fetish/bondage-inspired mary janes in patent black. They would at least give me some height at concerts!

I agree, I would never buy these or any heels that high. I hear the folks saying their comfy but they still seem ridiculous. Why so high? N how long and where would I actually wear these. No thank you,4 inches at most and nothing that makes my feet look heavy. Besides Louboutin heels are rarely comfortable and I swear they are intentionally made that way.

I've seen then where I like them, but as someone who doesn't wear high heels a lot I don't think I ever would wear such high heels, but I think some people can work them.

haha @ xoxo. some of us CAN afford them, thanks, so that's not why i wouldn't wear them. i think they make your foot look really large actually, not flattering. and i've seen girls trying to walk in them.. it's not pretty! plus, i'm already 5'7" so the extra height isn't needed. not for me, but for anyone who is into them, go for it.

i like them. on other people. i'm 6' barefoot and those would make me 6'5. plus it's extremely doubtful that i could even walk in them.

These are just cartoon-ish looking to me. Maybe my feet are just extremely sensitive, but I don't think I could even stand in these for longer than 30 minutes. I have to think people just wear heels like this when they know they are going to be photographed, because I never see actual people on the street walking around in them.

I'm with you cadrommy, where are the heels for people who have careers and love fashion but don't make enough to afford designer goods or work in an industry where 5" heels are acceptable?

Just listen to the name, "bondage pumps"! These designers are not making shoes for women in mind, they are creating these shoes for MEN and their male fantasies. Women can wear comfortable shoes and still be sexy without having to destroy their arches for designers like "Christian Louboutin and Brian Atwood" who are making money selling a false images to women who normally wouldn't wear these shoes on average in the first place.

I agree with your male fantasy comment. These shoes look like something porn stars would wear. And they don't have to worry about the shoes being uncomfortable at work b/c they're off their feet most of the time anyway

Think you're totally wrong about the "male fantasy" thing. As a dude, I find these ridiculous and clunky-looking. Normal high heels can be very sexy. Once they get beyond a certain height though, it seems it's more about designers outdoing each other, and women outdoing each other on who can be more impractical and haute couture. Once you start going sky-high with the heel/platform design of these monstrosities, it goes beyond ridiculous. That's just my take. I'm sure to some man somewhere they're sexy, but hey, some people think women dressed up in giant furry cartoonish costumes are sexy, so it takes all kinds. Women trying (often misguidedly and unsuccessfully) to impress men or be some sort of alpha female are just as guilty of promoting oppressive and (I'm sure) uncomfortable trends as any man ever was. As for the 'bondage' name - it's just marketing. Sex sells.
