Fake Bake 101: How to Use Sunless Self-Tanners

Sunless tanners have come a long way, which makes getting a convincingly natural-looking tan at home so easy. Or is it? With a little practice, patience and finesse, we think it's entirely possible. Here's a simple 4-step process to help you get started:

Hop in the shower and scrub down from head to toe with a great exfoliator. Right now, I'm loving Bain De-Luxe Foaming Body Scrub ($4.20) in Verbena. Prior to tanning, don't forget to shave, which is another form of exfoliating.

Lightly moisturize, paying special attention to dry spots like ankles, elbows and knees. Burt's Bees Milk & Honey Body Lotion ($8.59) does the trick for me every time. If you use a moisturizing body wash, you could probably skip this step. Some say it interferes with the tanner, I say you get a more even tan.

Apply tanner to the desired areas in small, circular motions. Use sparingly on those tricky knees, ankles and elbows. I know you're supposed to wear gloves, but I feel like I have better control using my bare hands. Have a wet cloth handy so you can wipe your palms immediately afterwards without washing the tanner of the top of your hands. Personally, I only use self-tanner on my legs, and I'm happy with the results I get from L'Oreal Sublime Bronze Self-Tanning Lotion ($8.54).

Let your tanner dry completely before getting dressed or coming into contact with anything - about 15-20 minutes (don't rush it!) Fix streaks by exfoliating the area once the tan has totally developed. Keep your fake bake from fading by moisturizing often.

What's your favorite sunless self-tanner?

YAY. Thanks for this post. I'm a self-tanning virgin who is getting tired of having brown arms and Cool Whip-colored legs. Now I needn't fear turning my legs into orangey Dreamsicles. ;-)

I used to love L'Oreal's Sublime Bronze, but I noticed that the bronzer would come off on my clothes, which got annoying. I recently switched to Nutrogena's Build A Tan, and it's great! It doesn't have that built in bronzer, so it doesn't stain clothing. The more you use it, the darker you'll get. I use mine every other day, along with a moisturizer, and I have a very natural looking tan now. You can use it on your face as well and it doesn't clog pores.

I'm very fair (unlike my Hawaiian husband who has perfectly bronzed skin all year round ... ::sigh::) and have had way too many awful sunless self-tanning experiences to ever try them again - Haha. If I need a quick tan for a special occasion, Mystic Tan has yet to fail me! I've had much better luck with gradual tanners and now use Jergens Natural Glow Daily Moisturizer for Fair Skin Tones ($6.29). I find that using it every other day, along with Jergens Natural Glow Face Daily Moisturizer SPF 20 ($6.49), gives me the perfect, even glow. Also, if you only use self-tanner on your legs, I HIGHLY recommend Michael Kors Leg Shine ($32 at Sephora), which comes in a twist-up stick, is perfect for last-minute events, and won't rub off on anything. A bit pricey? Yes. Totally worth it? Absolutely!

I use Jergens Glow Express, use it for 3 days straight and then randomly to keep it up. I absolutely love it and have gone through 4 bottles this summer alone (they're small!) It's so easy to put on--I do it before bed so I can wake up to a nice glow. No orangey look at all.

I have to agree with Taylor, Jergens moisturizer as well as the glow express is an amazing self tanner, and the prize is pretty amazing too. It's like 6 bucks a bottle and lasts you for awhile and I love the fact it gives you a nice bronze look and no streaks and doesn't make you look like an idiot =)

I used L'Oreal Sublime Bronze for a while and was happy with it. But although my skin color is light, I found the "for lighter skin tones" version completely useless, and went for the one for darker skin tones instead. It gives great color, but leaves streaks if you stop using it for a few days. Another con of L'Oreal is that when applying it smells nice, but in about an hour you start smelling like a sweaty coin (that gross metallic stench). Now I switched to Dove's self-tanner lotion, it smells yummy, doesn't get the metallic smell, gives great color and leaves absolutely NO streaks. Highly recommended. (this one I also use the one for medium to dark skin tone)

Thanks to everyone for the great recommendations, I am definitely going to try them out! My pale legs thank you, too :-)
