Does This Outfit Work? The Sophisticated Romper

The words "sophisticated" and "romper" are rarely uttered in the same breath, but I came across an outfit on Net-a-porter.com that got me thinking: Can a romper be more than child's play? The trouble is, even if the outfit on the left works, it costs a grand total of $537.50 (not including the purse). I managed to recreate the look with budget fashion finds from Forever 21 and Express, but I can't decide whether or not the cheap substitutes convey the same level of sophistication. Thoughts?

I think the romper is a bit too intimate to be taken seriously.. Looks more like lingerie than a romper..so my suggestion would be finding another one in better material!

I love the idea of a romper, I have to agree with daniela above that they can look like they belong in the bedroom. Maybe with the addition of a shrug would bring up the sophistication level. Let me know if you try it on through, curious if it is really short! I am tall and they have a tendency to be too short for me!

I think it totally works! Look at stars like Blake Lively. She always looks amazing in rompers and she is usually at red carpets, parties, etc. I definitely think this romper is sophisticated. Go for it!

Well, I think your outfit looks just as good as the $500+ one ... but personally I'm not a big fan of the romper except for the very young (as in the under-10 crowd). :-)

While I like the actual garment itself, what I really don't like is the name "romper"...I think it kind of reminds me too much of Romper Room. Couldn't they have thought of a better name for it? Other than that, I think the whole outfit is cute!

Blake Lively is an attractive gal, but even she doesn't look good in a romper. WHY OH WHY do these things even exist??

If you want that sort of look, minus the unflattering rompertrocity, just tuck a cute silk tank into some shorts of the same color (or keep the tank out and use a belt of the same color to give you a waistline).

The only place the romper should be allowed to roam, is on a toddler who isn't on Toddlers and Tiarras.

I wear rompers alot (I got mine from Target for $8 on the clearance rack). It looks very similar to this one and I wear the exact same way. I think it can go for a sophisticated look but def not work. I wore mine to a memorial day night party. It looked great!

LOL. I'm not a fan of the word "romper" either, and "onesie" is no better. Also dislike the word "maxi" dress...hmm we should come up with new terms.
