If you've been invited to a winter wedding and the thought of wearing a skimpy cocktail dress in sub-zero temps makes you shudder, never fear: There are stylish ways to winterize your formal look, as well as warmer yet no-less-chic alternatives to that strapless minidress. Trust me, I'm originally from Chicago and now I live in New England, so I KNOW cold.

Next, if you already have a dress in mind that you need to winterize, I'd invest in a long black wool coat. I've had mine for years and I've worn it to many winter weddings and other formal events to keep me warm from the house to the car to the banquet hall:
Tights, closed-toe shoes and shapewear can add another layer of frostbite protection, as seen here on the lovely Olivia Wilde (I can't be sure she's wearing shapewear, but just play along):
Bring a pashmina shawl, you can wear it as a scarf then drape it over your shoulders during dinner:
Likewise, a stylish bolero, shrug or faux-fur stole (or real if it's vintage) will keep body heat from escaping:
