Ask BB: How to Style A Brightly Colored Day Dress

Would you happen to be able to lend me your styling expertise? I just scored a great deal on an Apt 9 dress from Kohl's. $29.99. Marked down from $50. It is fuchsia, hits me right at knee. I am short. Just under 5'3". Sort of a satiny material but not cheesy. Anyway, could you recommend shoes and jewelry and handbag? I always love seeing the looks you put together and the links to the items. A versatile look for dinner out, brunch and summer wedding. —Barbara

I love your new dress, the color is bold and the silhouette is chic and versatile enough to work for day or night. Here's how I'd style it for a Sunday brunch, dinner date and casual summer wedding.

(Click on any item for shopping details.)

1. Sunday Brunch: For a laid-back breakfast with friends and/or family, toss on a dark denim jacket and nude sandals with your dress. (I couldn't find the exact dress online, so I'm using a different Apt. 9 for Kohl's dress to illustrate, but the same principles apply.) A cargo jacket or cardigan would work well, too. Draw inspiration from this look on Reese Witherspoon and add a fedora and wayfarer shades for extra cool points.

2. Dinner date: Pair your dress with a black blazer, black heels and a black clutch for a sophisticated evening look. This simple formula works equally well with a black leather jacket and just about any other statement-making heel. Add black tights if it's chilly.

3. Casual Summer Wedding: For a daytime wedding, add a polished white blazer and strappy pale gold heels, two classic and elegant pieces that you can wear over and over again. Dress up your look some more with eye-catching jewelry and a chain strap purse.

I have the same dress! I bought it for a wedding. I plan on wearing it w/nude peeptoe heels, gold earrings (haven't decided yet), gold cuffs with a floral/multicolor clutch.
Or, playing off the bright color in the same way Cameron Diaz did in one of her awards gowns, bold turquoise jewelry
