Kate Spade Spring 2013 Nail Looks by Deborah Lippmann

This morning, I headed to the city bright and early to kick off my first day of New York Fashion Week with a visit backstage at the Kate Spade Spring 2013 collection presentation. There, I caught up with nail guru Deborah Lippmann to talk nails. This was my first time meeting Deborah (she's great, as you'd expect) and I was dying to find out what she would create this season. The burning question on everyone's mind (okay maybe just mine): Could she top the polka-dot nails presented at Kate Spade's Fall show? Well, suffice to say, it's hard to pick a favorite - but Deborah and her team definitely upped the ante with a bold gingham print that made everyone smile, even the models!

The gingham was done on a fashion-forward stiletto nail in various colors to complement the prints found in the exuberant, retro fashions. Each gingham pattern starts with two coats of Amazing Grace, an opaque pure white lacquer, with a high-shine finish, as the base. From there, striping brushes were used to paint the lines for the pattern. A pink gingham pattern was created using I Kissed a Girl, a demi-matte pink from the Run the World (Girls) set.

The royal blue gingham was created using My Prerogative from the She's Always a Woman set, and the yellow is It Girl also from the Run the World (Girls) set, while Lara's Theme - a shade created with Lara Stone - represents the orange.

Adding another level of creativity to the looks, Deborah created a custom mint green lacquer for the show using a combination of existing shades - Amazing Grace, On the Beach and Yellow Brick Road.

While chatting with Deborah, she shared this DIY trick to help you recreate the look at home: Make a stencil out of Scotch tape, making sure your base coat is completely dry before you apply the tape. Paint your stripes in one direction, then remove the tape, allow to dry, and repeat in the opposite direction.

Some of the models sported a full set of clean white nails (seen also at Honor), created by using two coats of Amazing Grace, and all the models had white toes.

I was completely mesmerized by the nails and thought they complemented the collection perfectly. I've attempted gingham in the past and failed miserably but this show definitely inspired me to give it another try. Gingham nail polish strips would be fab, too (hint, hint!)

All the polishes shown here are available at www.deborahlippmann.com.

What do you think of Kate Spade's Spring nail looks? Is this something you would try?

Holy moly, lady! It has been for-e-ver since I visited BB. Gorgeous site facelift. I absolutely love it!

I disappeared because I had a child, haha! But I'm back. Can't wait to dig into your archives this weekend. :-)

I'm not a fan of plain white nails but I do like the navy and white looks. Thanks for posting!

Ugly!!! I would never wear these claws... good for Halloween only.

I love love love the gingham nails! I will definitely try it, but definitely not that nail shape. I've wanted to find budget gingham clothing but had no luck. I found lots of button up shirts, but those don't work with my chest. Anything gingham that you post I will love!

@Eve and @Laura- I agree with you both. Designs are good, but that shape is a show-stopper!

This is just hideous. What happened to the understated elegance that used to be Kate Spade? These tacky talons are just a joke. They all look like 99 cent drug store press on nails. Yuck.

Love the colors but I am a little scare about the new shapes. I see they are taking back to the late 60's early 70's. They remind me of Barbara Streisand....Another great post and thanks for sharing.

Loving the patterns and even the plain colored-ones. Agree with many others that that shape isn't very desirable for me.

Agreed! The stiletto nails are just too Cruella de Vil for me.
