First Look: Thakoon for Target

Thakoon for Target

Nylon mag has first look images of Thakoon for Target, a lighthearted line that won't launch until Christmas--and judging by how skimpy most of these clothes look, it's a collection meant for mid-winter vacations (meaning we won't be able to wear it until May or June).

So who is this Thakoon Panichgul? Soon-to-be First Lady Michelle Obama wore one of his floral frocks at the Democratic National Convention. Artist Laurie Simmons lent some of her surrealist art that included rosebuds with legs for Thakoon's Spring 2009 read-to-wear collection. And so it follows that Thakoon will be delivering plenty of prints and posies in his budget line for Target.

My problem with these first look photos is that they look like they could be from one of Target's regular in-house Private Label collections. Also, these looks are not exciting, or cutting-edge or "designer." I say this with the utmost respect for textile designers, but is Thakoon designing fabric or fashion? These are dreadfully boring prints and there isn't a single unique silhouette to speak of (standard tunic, t-shirt, sundress, shorts, bikini, etc.).

But hope springs eternal (and I am known to change my mind once I see something in person), so I'd say it's way too soon to write it off completely! What do you think?

I like the short coat and the first dress.

I like the exotic print on some of those outfits; and the t-shirt with floral and stripes. It looks cute.

I like the shorts in the second image. I know what you mean about the shapes being really standard (the shirts even looks kinda boxy) but as for the prints I think I have to see them in person. They could really go either way at this point.

I agree, they all look really basic. I think it truly says something when you look online at the Target website and the images for Merona or Mossimo look like the fabric is of higher quality than the marketing photos for this line! That said, the only piece I'm drawn to is the long coat. The second outfit you posted looks nice as an idea, but the material looks so cheaply made! I'm disappointed this go-round. I really hope that the MCQ line doesnt come off like this!!!!

I totally see what you mean: The prints are lovely, but the shapes are staid. Curious to see if they read better in person.

Am I ever going to like a designer Target collection? Sigh. LOL.

You're right. Though I do like that dress in that print. It's so pretty!

I LOVE the coat! And target has great shoes for us budget babes to go with the clothes. You can "fall up" the coat with a tall boot or ankle bootie. Check it out: http://www.fantastictoe.com/dcdiva/all-hail-the-new-fashionista-in-chief-get-michelle-obamas-look-for-less.html

Oh man! I thought the Jonathan Saunders collection was amazing, but Thakoon blows JS out of the water! Awesome.

These are the same exact prints from his Spring 08 runway collection. I have the original shibori print top and paid full price for it! I'll never buy from his designer collection again...this is annoying.

I purchased a few of the pieces. The blue and white shirtdress is lovely, and is a great fit. I am tempted to buy the same dress in black and white!
The green and blue striped dress however confuses me. It is so big that I could wrap it around my body twice! I understand it is supposed to be belted, but I don't think it works.
