Ask BB: Pretty Tights on a Budget

I have spent the whole summer looking for tights a la Blair waldorf from Gossip Girl that are at a reasonable price. Any idea where I can find some in nice colors and fabrics? —Jackie

Colored or patterned tights add visual interest to many cold-weather looks, and the best part is you don't have to spend a lot to get a great pair. This season, I'd recommend you try American Eagle, Target, barenecessities.com, Ann Taylor Loft, Nordstrom (Hue brand is great), Kohls (try Apt. 9 or Simply Vera Vera Wang), T.J. Maxx and Marshalls, or welovecolors.com.

Here are some great finds online:

Dear readers: Where do you shop for tights? Fave brands? Do tell!

The tights I'm wearing today (and love) are from the Merona Target brand. I got them in a two pack with a pair of solid black and textured, striped black pair. They were $5. I also got a pair of brown houndstooth tights that are very similar to a pair from J.Crew I loved (but were $20!) from Walmart for $7. I can't remember that brand.

I love the AE swiss dot tights you've featured.

Tights are so feminine and lovely, great fall/winter addition to your wardrobe. I love my Simply Vera ones that were dirt cheap around Black Friday last year. Also, Forever 21 has some for under $5. I'm not sure if they have them online, but they most definitely have bins of them in the store.

My absolute FAVORITE places for tights are welovecolors.com (which has some really off the wall but fun colors, and TJMaxx/Marshalls. At the TJ, you can find tights ranging in brands from Hue to Betsy Johnson to Spanx that NEVER cost more than 10 bucks, and most are closer to 8 dollars. Now, unless I'm looking for something specific, I only buy tights from TJ and Marshalls!

If you ever want regular black hosiery, the cheapest place: Walgreens! Seriously, no joke! They're normally between $1-$2. But if you catch a coupon in the local Sunday ad, you can get a pair for as little as 69 cents!!! (And they're pretty good quality. I totally stock up on my black hosiery from my local drugstore. Best kept secret!)

HUE makes great tights. I got a 2 pack of opaque black and royal blue at TJ Maxx for $10. Anthroplogie carries HUE tights for $12.50 in hard to find colors like mustard. I love mine.

I usually buy tights from Macy's (they carry HUE), since I get pretty good discount when using Macy's card/coupons. I recently tried tights from Target, I must say I was pretty impressed, they feel/look pretty good. I am starting to dislike control top since they are a bit uncomfy when worn for long hours.

I just got Nicole Miller patterned tights at TJ Maxx last night for $7! And they're super silky soft. love Also picked up some from Target as well, they had a nice selection of solid color and textured tights. Also noticed while I was in the Maxx they had a TON of footless leggings on hangers in the skirt section, so don't forget to check there!

I love tights! I wear them just about every day and I have a ton. Most of my tights are from TJ Maxx and Marshalls. This spring TJ Maxx had my dream HUE display (just like the one I drool over at Macy's). I also got a few pairs of great Betsey Johnson tights there this year. I found my Nicole Miller rose tights (also Marshalls) to not be as opaque as I hoped. My favorite tights are Wolford. They showed up last year at Xmas at TJ Maxx for $20. My boyfriend got me 4 pairs for xmas! I thought my boyfriend was a) awesome and b) crazy for spending that much, but I'm so glad he did! They are such nice quality and I'm sure they will last many years. I got a few more pairs of Wolford tights when they were on clearance for $5! If I ever find them at TJ Maxx or Marshalls for $20 I'll jump!

Great post! I haven't worn tights since I paired them with pig tails in kindergarten, but I would love to try to incorporate them into my grown-up wardrobe. I think I already know how to wear black tights, but I would love to hear some tips for wearing some of the more fun, daring colors (e.g., teal, maroon, etc.) without looking like an extra on the set of Austin Powers! Do you have any tips for how a conservative dressing young mom can pull off this fun style without looking like she's trying to hard?

The easiest way to incorporate colored tights into your wardrobe is to keep the rest of your outfit pretty subdued. For example, I love wearing maroon tights with a basic black dress and black flats or boots. I think wearing brightly colored tights with white, dark blue or green, brown, and black outfits ends up looking great -- you have the color but not too much of it. Colored tights are also a great way to draw attention to your legs in the winter.

Good tights are worth a splurge -- I have a black Liz Claiborne pair from high school (when the shorts with tights trend first passed through) that still look great. I think I paid $16.

banana republic, when they have a sale, has absolutely fabulous great quality tights for $5.

Online from American Apparel. They have a great selection of colors and their tights are well made. And it looks like they have a 30% off sale going on now.
