Each week, we're turning to some of our favorite fashion bloggers for tips on when to splurge and when to save. This week, we're chatting with the lovely Kimberly of Penny Pincher Fashion!
WHAT IS YOUR GENERAL SHOPPING PHILOSOPHY?
I almost always choose budget items or if it's a more expensive piece that I want, I will wait patiently for a sale or scour listings on eBay to see if I can find it for less. My rule is to never pay full price for items over $50
HOW DO YOU DECIDE TO INVEST IN A SPLURGE? WHERE WOULD YOU RATHER SAVE?
I have to be able to justify the cost per wear - my Michael Kors watch was a splurge item (even though I got it on sale), but it's a piece I've worn almost every day for the last 2 years, so it was a purchase that made sense for me. I know most people say to invest in shoes, but I have the worst luck with my kids stepping on my toes and getting my heels stuck in cracks on the sidewalk. But a woman who works in an office everyday probably would want to pay more for comfortable classic pumps. It all comes down to your lifestyle and what you need/will use the most.
MOST-BELOVED SPLURGE.
My J. Crew Cocoon Coat - because I live in upstate NY, our winters are really hard and long so a good quality coat is important. I did buy it on sale (of course), however it was still over $100. But, I wore it so much last winter that it easily made it worth the investment, plus I know I will have it for years to come.
FAVORITE STEAL.
So hard to pick just one! Probably my white H&M blazer, which I bought on sale for $20 - I've had it for over 2 years and wear it constantly. It's one of my favorite ways to dress up a casual look.
MOST REGRETTABLE BUY
So many times I've gotten sucked in by the J. Crew sales and I end up buying pieces I don't really "need" just because it's J. Crew & the price is so great. I've ended up either returning these or reselling them on Poshmark - it's something I've learned my lesson from and I'm trying to make more thoughtful purchases now so this doesn't happen.
WHAT DOES YOUR FALL WISHLIST LOOK LIKE?
I am determined to find the perfect riding boots this year - I tried and tried last fall, but didn't want to settle for something ill-fitting or uncomfortable. I would also love to add a few more leather pieces to my wardrobe - a cognac jacket and little shift dress are on my wish list.
