An Homage to the Balenciaga Blazer

BalenciagaSince making its appearance on runways in Paris this past March, the Balenciaga piped blazer has been called the must-have statement piece for winter among the fashion elite (props to designer Nicolas Ghesquière).

But with mile-long waiting lists and a pretty price of £1,300 (2,660.71 USD), you'd be hard-pressed to get your gloved hands on the real deal.

Fortunately, it's the funky-preppy styling that truly sets this look apart—an androgynous get-up marked by military, equestrian and ethnic references—and it can be effortlessly achieved with a few carefully selected items.

Here's how to do it:

  • Two words: Go thrifting. Scour your favorite secondhand shops for vintage blazers, ethnic print scarves and antique buttons.

  • Check your closet. Chances are you already own a blazer that you can dress up with the right scarf or update by sewing on those new buttons you scored at the thrift store.

  • Consider investing in a new blazer. This timeworn piece will take you far into the fashion future with ease, thus bringing down the eventual cost-per-wear.

If you opt to shop for a new blazer, here are four budget-friendlier homages to the original:

[1] Mango Tercio Jacket, $89
[2] J. Crew Double-faced wool Lexington jacket in gray, $250
[3] J. Crew Lexington jacket in ivory, $250
[4] Lux Exeter blazer, $68

Hollywould for Target

New York-based Holly Dunlap, creative designer of Hollywould, has designed a line of affordable accessories for Target.

What's Holly thinking? *Moth not included.

We have yet to experience this collection in person, but what we've seen online leaves much to be desired. How the shoes—which are covered in satin, lace, leopard print and patent leather—relate to the handbags (grotesque, plastic-looking brown, navy and black monstrosities) is completely beyond us.

Gotta say, we've see better-designed collections for our Barbie dolls.

Luxe vs. Less: Criss Cross Pumps

Knock, knock...

Who's there?

Another Christian Louboutin knock-off by Steve Madden, of course!

The Loubie on the left is cute, but it's not that cute...at least we don't think it's worth copying at the risk of another lawsuit. (And we thought Madden came out of prison a changed man.)

Besides, who would pay $99.95 for the knock-offs? Psssh...keep dreaming!

What do you think? Would you rock the fakes or blow next month's rent on the real ones?

Luxe: Christian Louboutin Criss Cross Vamp Pump, $620.00
Less: Steve Madden Becki pumps in white leather, $99.95

Luxe vs. Less: The Satin Trench

Leave it to the daring geniuses at Dolce & Gabbana to design the sexy red satin trench you see on the left. It's hot alright, but the $1,295 pricetag is a big turn-off. Fortunately, budget babes can get in on the fun, too—Bebe's red satin trench on the right is just $129. Steamy!

Luxe: D&G Dolce & Gabbana short belted trench coat, $1,295
Less: Bebe satin trench coat in cerise, $129
