Savvy Gifts for the Whole Gang

If you need to get gifts for extended family, coworkers or every gal in your sorority, you need a one-stop shopping destination that's affordable yet still reflects your discerning taste. Here's where we like to shop when we need to pick up presents for lots of people:

IKEA: You may just associate IKEA with cheap furniture and homegoods, but they also have great gift items at incredibly low prices. Head straight to their lower level (or wherever their check-out is located) for stylish holiday merchandise, tasty edible treats, and cool decorations for the home like lovely vases (the ones shown here are just $6.99 each), candles and picture frames. Or hit the children's section for beautiful toys that are as fun to look at as they are to play with.

You could also pick up inexpensive baskets which you can fill with various goodies - think coffee beans and a mug, or biscuits, jam and a teacup - wrap with colorful cellophane and pretty ribbons and you're all set. They even have cute gifts for the pet lover on your list - a food dish for Fido or comfy cat bed for Mittens. As far as we're concerned, shopping IKEA is foolproof - their tasteful, contemporary Swedish design can be appreciated by all.

Whole Foods: Give the gift of organic goodness - cuz let's face it, most of us can't afford to fill a grocery cart willy-nilly with stuff from Whole Foods on a regular basis. In addition to flowers and food, check out their organic, eco-friendly bath & body products (luxurious soaps, lotion and lip balm), plus stuff for tots (organic cotton tees and bibs), stuff for the home (candles, incense) - even stuff for the kitchen (acacia wood salad bowls and French cookware by Le Creuset).

Or, create a clever themed gift basket, say, a "Superfoods" giftbasket with products that have antioxidant-rich pomegranate, blueberry, or acai berry. Add some dark chocolate, raw almonds, a bottle of cold-pressed olive oil and some green tea, and you've created a wholesome, good-for-you gift. Deliver in a reusable shopping bag to complete the theme. Hey, it's cheaper than most spa treatments!

Another great basket idea that's always a big hit is what we like to call a "Sushi starter kit" - place sushi rice, soy sauce, rice vinegar, wasabi paste, nori (dried seaweed sheets), bamboo rice paddle, chopsticks, pickled ginger, and a sushi mat in a reusable bamboo basket or tray. Include a note card with instructions for preparing California rolls (thinly slice green onions, avocado, cucumber and imitation crab meat, arrange on rice and roll). (You can find all these items in the "ethnic" aisle of many grocery stores or hit up Chinatown if you live in a big city.)

Cost Plus World Market: Find out-of-the-ordinary gifts from around the globe. Some suggestions: Two champagne flutes and a bottle of bubbly; a selection of beers from around the world; a selection of gourmet sodas; all-natural Mrs. Meyer's cleaning supplies; earrings, bangles and a jewelry box; bath soaps and a loofah; popcorn bucket filled with imported chocolates and candies; gourmet sea salt, salami, olives and crackers; a set of Moroccan tea glasses (shown here, $23.94 - $29.94).

Bath & Body Works: When it comes to gift giving, sometimes it's better to give a useful albeit unoriginal gift, than a unique and utterly useless gift. Which brings us to Bath & Body Works - who couldn't use a nice set of lip balm, a fragrant beeswax candle or a bottle of shower gel? Just stick with fresh scents that aren't overly fruity or flowery to please the most noses are your list. (Shown here: C.O. Bigelow Forever Lemon Soap and Lotion Caddy, $22.50)

Must-Have Jewelry: Cocktail Rings

Cocktail rings give the women who wear them an instant air of glamour and confidence. Generous chunks of sparkling gemstones, crystal or glass speak to the vanity of bling - they're decadent and dramatic but above all, fun! While cocktail rings make a big statement, you don't have to spend a small fortune to own one - the luscious cocktail rings you see here from Laila Rowe are all just $20 or less. Right now you can scoop one up for a friend (they make fab gifts) and get another for yourself at 50% off. High-five!

[1] Circle Gem Stone Ring, $18
[2] Rhinestone Ring (more colors available), $15
[3] Square shaped gem stone ring in garnet and gold, $18
[4] Square shaped rhinestone ring, $20
[5] Square shaped gem stone ring in Hematite, $20
[6] Oval shaped gem stone ring, $20

Great Gifts: Pop-Open Sweater Dryer

I am a huge advocate of washing clothes at home, either by hand or in the washing machine, even when the tag says "dry clean only." Washing garments at home is better for your clothes, your health, the environment AND your wallet.

The trouble is finding a nice spot to dry your delicates after your wash them—and that's why we absolutely love the Container store's Pop-Open Sweater Dryer. It's a cheap, space-saving way to quickly and easily drip-dry hand washed items such as sweaters and lingerie. Sized to fit over or inside the bathtub, the pop-open sweater dryer springs open for use and folds flat for storage. The arched shape allows for all-around airflow and faster drying.

At $7.99, this practical contraption makes an ideal gift for all the ladies on your list this holiday season.

Great Affordable Gifts for Guys

Dear Budget Babe,
Where can I find cool holiday gifts for my man that won't break the bank?
Sincerely,
Peaches

TBB: Men may not covet the latest shoe or handbag like us girls, but their costly hobbies (think electronics, cars, photography or sports) can often make gift-giving an expensive, not to mention confusing, endeavor. The trick is to be observant (take notes if necessary) and get inside your sig-o's head to understand what would really make him happy. When in doubt, go for anything edible or anything that requires batteries. But if beef jerky is all that comes to mind, heck, that's fine too. Resist the temptation to give him a wardrobe makeover or buy him beauty products. And whatever you do, DON'T buy him a tie.

With that in mind, here are some great places to start shoppin':

ThinkGeek.com: Geeky toys, gadgets and whatchamacallits
NewEgg.com: Computer everything
Target: Video games, electronics, socks, tees, boxers, PJs, candy & gourmet junk food
SierraTradingPost: Apparel and more for the rugged outdoorsman
REI: Camping and hiking gear - we recommend the manly Gerber Gator Combo Axe.
Threadless: Awesome logo tees that are sure to please plus irreverent slogan tees that say things like "Shakespeare hates your emo poems."
Hammacher Schlemmer: Unique and bizarre gadgets & gifts, like the World's Largest Crossword Puzzle.
Peet's Coffee.com: One-stop shop for coffee lovers. We recommend buying him a French press for brewing (buy one for under $30 on Amazon.com).
Calumet Photo: Everything for the avid photographer. Wallet-friendly options include memory cards, a mini tripod, camera or lens case, high-quality photo paper, or an enlargement of one of his fave prints.
Zappos: Laptop bags, camera bags, shoes, leather accessories. We heart everything by Timbuk2.
Lego.com: The Lego Ferrari will appeal to his inner child - and it's a helluva lot cheaper than the real deal.
A Collage a Day blog: Get an original work of art by Randel Plowman for $25. He'll dig it.
American Grassfed Beef: Yummy gourmet natural beef jerky - no preservatives and it's made from lean, grass-fed beef (he won't know it's good for him.)
