With my "Decorate by Number" series, getting the looks of the pristine interiors that grace your favorite decor magazines is as easy as 1, 2, 3! This week, we're recreating a serene grey and white bedroom with furniture and accessories from 6pm.com, Land of Nod and more.
Grey is often thought of as a bland neutral, but I disagree! For the bedroom, it's the perfect hue to create a calming and welcoming space, without looking drab or boring. Decorating with grey and white lends itself to a high-style space without much effort or a big budget.
In the inspired room (above), the bold wallpaper pattern and mix of textured and layers in the duvets and rugs create a comfortable space, while the asymmetrical layout and minimal use of color keep it is sophisticated and luxurious. It’s a space I'd want to call home and crash after a long day’s work! I also love the mix of contemporary and traditional influences. This inspired room is a good example of looking at grey in a new light: it’s a color that is flexible, sleek, and serene.
To achieve a similar look, select the largest items - such as the headboard and wallpaper - in light grey. A high style, low cost tip? Go with a headboard as opposed to a bed. You can save a lot of money by forgoing a bed frame, without sacrificing style. With your larger pieces covered, layer on your white comforter and neutral rugs. A good decorating tip to remember is that monochromatic pieces and neutrals can look more expensive as opposed an eclectic room with a variety of colors. Finally, a sunburst mirror can serve as the focal point of the room and bring the space together.
What do you think about grey in the bedroom?
1. Sunburst Mirror, $69
2. Trellis Print Wallpaper, $56/roll
3. Faux Hide Rug, $80
4. Quilted Coverlet, $99
5. Moroccan Leather Pouf, $199
6. Decorative Pillow, $20
7. Hanger Desk Lamp, $90
8. Notched Headboard, $349
