The Budget Babe Reviews Marimekko for Target

Marimekko for Target
After months of anticipation, the Marimekko for Target collection finally launched on Sunday and in some ways already feels like old news (funny how that work in the fashion world)...but here's my review. I was able to get to my Target store late Sunday afternoon and found almost everything was still in stock in many sizes. I was the only one perusing the items. I personally love Marimekko and have for some time, so I was excited by this collab but still thought there was room for improvement. The fabrics were really cheap even by fast fashion standards. Think scratchy terrycloth and barely-there rayon.

Since the theme was endless summer, it was mostly beachy coverups and swimsuits. I thought the little girl's clothes were the cutest - the colorful eclectic prints lend themselves to whimsical looks for little ones.

I thought things fit pretty true to size - for your reference, I'm wearing size M in the multicolor tunic, size S/M in the terrycloth poncho, size M in the blue/black top, size S/M in the kaftan, and size M in the palazzo pants (super long even on me and I'm 5'8"). My sister overheard shoppers say the sizing was very generous.

Since I'm not really in the market for a swimsuit or coverup, I didn't buy any of the clothes. In the home section, I thought the melamine plates looked dull in person. I wish Target had sold pillow cases rather than pillows. My sister bought the tent and said the construction is really solid and nice. But we both agreed that certain items could have been omitted from the collection - like the $100 bocce ball set or whatever it was.

The tote bags were really nice and well priced while the towels were cool but not the best quality for the price.

I shopped online in the wee hours of the night and bought 2 tote bags, two sets of kitchen dish towels, two beach towels, two scarves, and a set of plates. I may return some items, we'll see.

I wish they had made a water resistant picnic blanket, maybe an insulated lunch box or thermos or water bottles - stuff I could really use this summer! And my sister just wanted some indoor items like a duvet or throw...stuff we can use beyond the "endless" summer.

What did you think of the collection and what did you buy??

Great review! I felt the same as you did on just about everything, while the collection was cute overall, something was missing for me, adding items like you mentioned (throw or something that would last beyond the summer) and ditched the random kite, bocce ball set, lol. Everything looked so cute on you but those palazzo pants are crazy long!

Thanks Tracy! Loved reading your review. And I would have bought a kite if it was cheaper...my toddler's been asking for one! But not at this price...

Can you tell me where you got the shoes in your first pic? They're super cute!

There ARE throw blankets available in the Kaivo and Harka prints. I picked up the Kaivo -- it's reversible, too! :-)

I agree with you. This collab could've been much better, as I still own a Marimeko for H&M dress that's 10 years old. The quality of the kids clothes was bad for $22 a set, should have been priced at $10. Love your website!

Great review! I wish they would have made a few more everyday dresses or tops instead of so much beachwear. But overall, cute collab with great prices!!

Couldn't agree more. That seems to be the general consensus. Even when I go to the beach I tend to wear shorts and a long sleeve cotton blouse to protect my skin from the sun. Thanks for commenting!!

You make a great point! I didn't care for the terry cloth cover ups, but the swimsuits and Girls' clothing were cute. So many mommy-and-me possibilities. I tried on some of the Girls' pieces. I would've liked to see a yoga mat, bedding, a rain umbrella, structured clothing for Women, maybe more footwear, etc. in this collection. Since the collection was heavily focused on the outdoors and not on apparel, I didn't buy as much as previous Target capsule collections. Your reviews are always helpful and insightful, so thank you! I'm sharing some of my thoughts in my review. http://www.thekeytochic.com/2016/04/marimekko-for-target-review.html

Hey Melissa!! Loved reading your review as always. You're lucky you can dip into the girls' clothing. I love your alternate picks, too. I found myself glancing over at the Xhilaration and Mossimo racks thinking, that's cute! I should get that instead!

I was also disappointed that they decided not to include the poppy print. I guess they wanted to make a clear distinction between their high-end collection and this fast-fashion collab...I would have loved to have seen a rain umbrella, too!

All in all I'd say you had a successful haul - my online purchases arrived yesterday (super fast!) but I haven't opened the boxes yet. Hoping to do that today.

I think the prints are pretty but I don't have any need for anything from the collection. The black and white chevron swim suit is really adorable though.

I LOVE bold prints so I was really hoping for more every day wear. The pieces I got will have to do. I want that large strawberry mountains towel but $40 is steep! It'll be great for my Maui honeymoon :-)

Oh congrats! Have fun in Maui! If you're still dreaming about that towel in a couple days, I say go for it :-)

I think Target has a HUGE flop on their hands! There was so much print advertising for Lilly Pulitzer and Missoni in Vogue, Instyle, and TV ads, and I saw NOTHING about Marimekko. I heard of their stuff before, but most Americans have never heard of this Finnish company. There were not enough dresses! I didn't like that floor length dark mumu at all. The black/white terry cloth "dress" was scratchy and poor quality. I live in CA. and there were no shorts or shirts really. The bold pattern on the ONE "mini dress" is just too loud. It's already 80-90 F in SoCal, and I don't like the black/white colors at all (black is NOT a summer color and I don't want any white areas on a bathing suit that gets wet, and then is see-through. The beach leggings and pants were gross! The towels were very thin. The flip flops over-priced. I ended up buying the BIG napkins- at home I sewed them into sofa pillow case covers and they look great! This could have been a cute line if Target would have test marketed this with women in CA. and FL BEFORE production. NO NO NO to this black and white pattern for summer.

You raise some excellent points (hadn't even thought about the white bathing suit "problem" areas but then again I avoided all swimwear!)
I do have a sewing machine, I love your pillow case idea...
Appreciate your feedback, hope Target is listening! Thanks for commenting.

Hi Dianna, I just had to put in my two cents on Marimekko. I first heard of the company in the '70's but they have been around longer than that. Too high end for me to purchase at the time. That is why I was delighted with Target for allowing me to pick up a few pieces and love them! I bought a lumbar pillow for my patio, kitchen towels, (so what if they were too big, use as place mats), melmac salad plates, and ordered the black/white sleeveless dress and the blue print shorts. Everything in the collection brightened up my apartment...I am an avid fan of Target, like their groceries and just about everything else they sell. The sale is still going on so I might get the pouf and few more plates. I can find no fault with Target in putting out their line of Marimekko.

Thanks Margot, I always love reading your insightful comments. I tend to nitpick with these collabs but the heap of items I bought suggests I was pretty excited by this collab as well! I think I'll get a lot of use out of the items I purchased.
