First Look: Isaac Mizrahi's New Liz Claiborne Line

We've waited nearly one year to see what Isaac would do post-Target, and now WWD has a first look at Isaac Mizrahi's new Claiborne collection for Spring 2009. I think it's brilliant (even if I wouldn't wear all of these pieces myself). The blue striped maxi dress and black and white square-print dress are my favorites. Looks like at least one of my predictions for 2009 is destined to come true. What do you think? (More pics after the jump.)

I have surprised myself by liking a few key pieces of this collection.

Overall, I like where he's going with it. It looks much less "old lady" than Liz Claiborne usually does! I agree with you, too - The striped maxi and the square print dress are my favorite pieces. I love the way the denim skirtsuit looks on the model, but I'm not sure how well it would make the jump to "real life".

It's a nice mix- some of it is totally "Liz" and others I see him.

Ooh I like! Particularly the blue-white maxi dress and the all-denim ensemble!

Liz Claiborne clothes seem to always end up at our local Ross at the end of the season, so I hope Isaac's designs will end up there too! For some strange reason I'm always drawn to LC styles, even though I've rarely bought anything. Now that Isaac (my hero!) is the main guy there I can't wait to see what they do!

I like it! I think you were right too BB- I think that he's done a good job for them!

I agree with Katie - nice to see some younger, fresher, more modern stuff injected into the Liz line. Some of it might be TOO out there, though. That khaki dress with the drawstring top? I furrow my brow at it.

Oh, I like it... still very Isaac but a little classier than the Target line. I love his take on femininity. He just knows how to dress a woman. You can tell he is passionate about it.

The one exception is the orange/yellow outfit. What is up with that? A little too whoopie goldberg for me.

Hahahahaha!!! Whoopie Goldberg! you are so right, when I read that I was like "YES!!!" - Too funny!!!

It definitely looks like Isaac meets Liz!

I also love the black and white square print dress.

Yes, he did do a surprisingly good job. I always liked his Tarjay collections, but sometimes the fit was pretty "funky". Sizing was all over the map.
I hope the Liz stuff is his stuff, but much better made
Thanks for the preview BB

I hate to be the (so far) lone dissenter but I hate all of the clothes.

#1 Looks like: 1980s Skipper shirt paired with boring pants

#2 Looks like: Potato sack.

#3 Looks like: A dress almost no normal woman could wear. The horizontal stripes will be murder on anyone not stick thin, the length is terrible for short women. And with a length like that? I would not wear those clunky shoes- you can’t see your feet and you’re wearing two boats strapped to them?

#4 Looks like: Cool coat, cool dress, neither is cool enough to want though, and I hate the combination and I am not a fan of animal prints anyway.

#5 Looks like: It’ll be pretty popular among middle aged women in middle to upper class resorts or summer communities.

#6 Looks like: Okay, that one’s alright but how many people want the businesslike denim suit look?

#7 Looks like: Actually alright but nothing special either.

I agree with Babydraco. I wouldn't buy a single piece. #1: Looks like a gathered bag or a flower swallowed her head. #2: Looks like something a retired woman in Florida would wear to lunch. #3: DEFINITELY a potato sack.#4 and #5: I agree. No woman would look good in these. NO ONE. #6: Umm...Hari Krishna alert. #7: Denim business suit? It's like a bad joke from the late 80's. And lastly, #8: This I actually like. However, I'm sure I wouldn't like it enough to pay whatever ungodly price tag will end up on it. I'm actually a bit saddened by this collection. I liked his stuff for Target better. ;-)

I also like the blue & white maxi dress, but I think it would look better with a slightly higher waistline.

Absolutely love it!! Anybody know what the price points will be?
#13 budget chic on 2009-01-12 09:11 (Reply)
Sources say prices will average $30 for a T-shirt and up to $250 for outerwear. So that's about the same as usual for Liz.

Thanks for all of the wonderful pictures. I really love the picture of the denim suit. Good to know what's coming in the new line. Thanks a bunch.
