Off the Rack: Winter Coats at Target

Merona Wool Topcoat in Gray Plaid, $59.99

If there's one thing I love as much as boots, it's winter coats. While I won't hesitate to forgo style in lieu of survival, there are ways to look good while staying warm—and having a chic wool coat in your arsenal is one of them. Now to be completely honest, I'm not sure a Target coat will have what it takes to withstand a New England winter, but they sure are looking good this season. So I bought one as a sort of test. My gut says it won't be warm enough (I grew up in Chicago, after all), but we shall see! If you're looking for a second coat that you can wear with certain outfits, then definitely check out the offerings at Target. Here are some highlights, photographed by yours truly so you can compare the product photos with "real life." (Click any image to go to Target.com.) Who's loving Target's coats this year?

Merona Hip Length Wool Jacket in Black/White Houndstooth, also available in Camel/Gray. ($50)

Mossimo Black Wool Hooded Jacket in Dark Blue, $59.99. Also available in black, brown, black/navy and possibly other colors.

Mossimo Black Wool Drape Collar Jacket in Red Multicolor, $59.99. This is the coat I ended up buying.

Merona Long Wool Jacket with Toggle Buttons in Yellow, $59.99. Also available in purple, green, black and possibly some other colors too...

Merona Wool Peacoat Jacket in Red, $40. Also available in green, pink, teal, blue, purple/gray plaid and possibly others!

Fabulous options! I especially love the hooded jacket, the toggle button jacket, and the short peacoat. I might have to see what my local Target has to offer. :-) So, which did you choose?

I got the "Mossimo Black Wool Drape Collar Jacket in Red Multicolor"--I loved the collar, color, and the way it fit through the back. I think it will work with pants or dresses/skirts. It was hard to pick just one.

Also, I got a great Missoni-esque scarf to go with it. The overall effect is very "Anthropologie." I highly recommend picking a coat, then going over to the scarf section--play around and see what works. They have a great selection.

Love the yellow toggle coat! I haven't seen all of these at Targets in my area though.

I live in the South but the blue one with the hood looks pretty warm.

You are utterly adorable, BB! I love the style you’ve selected and you might get more use out of it right and in Spring rather than in Winter. But these types of lightweight Winter coats are perfect for places with milder Winter temperatures. When you need to truly brave the elements – you need a sassy down puffer :-)

I like the one you chose and the top one, the grey with tan plaid.

I love them all, but the plaid and blue are my favorite. I need (well, want) a new coat, so it looks like I'm going to have to make a Target run now!

The houdstooth coat is lovely! I also really like the yellow one. The prices seem just about right to try a new coat trend without committing to the high ticket price.

I just bought the yellow toggle in green. It is a beautiful, cheerful holiday green and I hope it can be worn for some serious caroling during the Christmas season. Layer it up and go. It made me smile in the store.

I like all of them, I need Target to come down off their pricings. They have gone up on everything in their apparel department.

How did that last one - the short wool peacoat jacket - fit? Especially in the sleeves? I've always noticed that Target coats specifically always have HUGE sleeves, which makes the jacket ofttimes out of proportion for me.

The sleeves fit well but I guess it will depend on the length of your arms. With my arms by my side, the sleeves reached the bases of my thumbs (a good thing!) and with arms outstretched, they covered my wrists. You could probably layer a shirt plus lightweight sweater or hoodie comfortably underneath.
