The Look for Less: DAY Birger et Mikkelsen Striped Layer T-shirt

A striped shirt is a wardrobe essential. Don't worry about the horizontal lines making you look wider, it's a myth! Well, except in photos. But in person, stripes looks flattering and chic. Pair this DAY Birger et Mikkelsen Striped Layer T-shirt ($89, net-a-porter.com) with skinnies and flats or wear with wide leg jeans and platform sandals for a casual spring look.

Get the look for less with this top by Mossimo, just $12.99 at target.com.

I bought this top a couple sizes bigger than normal so I can wear it as a tunic with my skinnies. I think it looks great paired with printed scarfs, layered under a denim or leather jacket. Easy and comfortable!

Ooh, I like the idea of taking a normal top and making it a tunic. When you aren't wearing something over it, does it still hang right?

Sizing up doesn't always work but in this case, it totally does. I think it's because of the 3/4 length sleeves and boat neckline. I'd experiment and try things on to see if it looks right on you :-)

I hope I picked the right "reply to" choice, but I am speaking to the stripped Target tunic.

After reading your review I got right on my BIKE (thank you! First ride of the season) and rode over to Target, found the top, found several other cute cute tops on the clearance racks, and rode home. A good day!

I've been eyeing that Mossimo top for a few days now thinking just the same thing - if I could size up and use it like a tunic! Good to know, BB, I'll probably snatch it up. I'm slowly overcoming my fears, found a great pair of skinnies, at Target no less, on the clearance rack for just $9, horizontal stripes next!

BB, can you write more about tunics? I think they're pretty trendy right now, especially given the popularity of skinnies and leggings, but what exactly is a tunic? More precisely, how does it differ from a long shirt or a short dress? How is it supposed to fit? Is it a faux pas to wear one with leggings because you might end up with the dreaded VPL? Thanks!

Saw a top very similar to this a few months back at Forever 21 -- super cute!
