Review: Dropps Laundry Detergent

Recently I received three complimentary packages of Dropps laundry detergent ($7.99 for a 26-load pouch at Target stores) to test and review. I've washed about a half-dozen loads of laundry in the past few days since receiving my Dropps and I can not wait to tell you what I think! Keep reading to find out...

What they say: Launched in 2005, Dropps is an innovative liquid detergent packaged in pre-measured, dissolvable pacs. Its super-concentrated, convenient "toss-and-go" form takes the mess and confusion out of pouring liquid from giant plastic jugs and makes it super-lightweight to handle. Dropps works for all temperatures, washers, colors and fabrics, including silk, cashmere, rayon and wool. Its EPA Design for the Environment (DfE) certified formulas are all phosphate-free, enzyme-free and biodegradable, making them as good on the planet as they are on your clothes and skin.

What I think: Dropps are the best invention since white bread (or whole wheat that doesn't taste like cardboard). These surprisingly small pouches pack a whole lot of eco-friendly cleaning power. I was a little skeptical at first that one pouch could clean an entire load, especially in cold water, but it totally did! Dropps are super convenient, take up very little space and make doing laundry that much simpler.

In addition to regular loads, I've used Dropps to get my dog's blankets clean and fresh, I've used them on my designer jeans and I've used them on my wool socks. They are amazing.

I always suspected that I was probably using way too much laundry detergent than was necessary in the past, but now I'm certain that I was just pouring money down the drain (out of laziness, I'd often just pour maybe 3/4 of a cap full of regular laundry detergent for all my loads. Bad, I know.) I love that Dropps are pre-measured so you'll always use just the right amount of detergent per load. Honestly I don't think I'll ever go back to the plastic jugs.

Has anyone else converted to Dropps laundry detergent? Isn't it the best?

I had never heard of these, but they sound exactly like what I've hoped to find in laundry detergent. Great review-- I can't wait to try them! Thanks!

These look amazing! I'll totally have to try them out.

I'm guilty of using too much detergent, too, so these look fantastic!

I have tried them and I'm also a huge fan. However, they just don't do it when it comes to my workout clothes. For those I either use regular container detergent or use the Dropps with some baking soda.

Thanks for the feedback and the great tip re: baking soda (eco and cheap!)

I will try these next time I buy detergent. Way less plasic than a jug, and less detergent-waste. Not to mention no more hauling a jug of detergent up/down three flights with my laundry.

Totally, Dropps would have been a godsend during my many years of renting and having to hike up and down at least 3 flights of stairs! Good for trips to the laundromat, too.

I love Dropps! I've been using them for about 2 years now...I first found out about them when another blogger reviewed them. He said they're also good for teaching kids about laundry b/c they're so small and convenient, and little kids can actually help (as opposed to trying to lift up a big heavy jug).

How are they with cleaning whites? Do your clothes come out soft like if you were to use a seperate softner?
#6 MrsEmilyN on 2011-01-06 15:01 (Reply)
Great question, I haven't tried them with a load of just whites yet, I have so few things that are white and most of them are summer items (tanks and such).

Can anyone else speak to this?

I've switched to the pre-measured kind for dishwasher and was just thinking how they needed this for laundry because I always overpour! Woohoo - I'll have to check these out!

Do these little wonders come in a softener form? I prefer using liquid softener since a lot of my tops necessitate air drying and I still want them to smell nice and feel soft.

I need to get these! We were using melaleauca for years but I'm ready to explore other options. I will try these out. Thanks for the review.

Come on, really?

They're manufacturing single-use packets to BE ENVIRONMENTALLY FRIENDLY?

I appreciate that they sent you free stuff. But come. on.

They're dissolvable

They aren't single-use packets. They are single-use "pacs." The "pacs" dissolve completely in the wash. From the website:

"The unique Dropps pac completely dissolves when it hits your wash water and drains right out with the rinse cycle. It is made out of a 100% biodegradable material, so you don’t have to worry about its impact on the environment."

What did you think of the "Fresh Scent?" Would you recommend it over the unscented kind? I think I'm going to try this, but wondering if the smell is overpowering...?
#11 NG on 2011-01-06 22:30 (Reply)
I'd describe the fresh scent as light, clean and almost imperceptible. Since I don't really care for fragrances all that much, this is a good thing!

I think this is a great idea when you're going out of town. Seems convenient. Thanks for the review.

Not one comment on how well they clean!
How do they do on ground in dirt and grass from kid's sport uniforms?
How well do they do on mechanic's greasy clothing?
Food stains?
Baby stains?
I love the smell of Downey so I try to buy liquids that contain Downey scent / fabric softener. I'm not sure this is the right product for the average family's dirty laundry since no one mentioned how clean their laundry is with dropps.

I know u asked a long time ago and they do have ones for fabiric softening too. Also plenty of other options (scent free, two scented versions as well as several other options. I just purchased them and found them while on Facebook. They have a web site where u can order them as a one time shipment or order them as a reoccurring order..so no more running out while doing laundry or having to lug bottles in the house and best part is they are still very inexpensive after all these years.
I got 56 for just under $12 and for all the hassle saved and ease of use and quality of the product. .I'm happy

I've used them and they didn't clean well at all. I don't use them anymore.

Dropps should be on the shelf of every store selling laundry detergent

I’ve recently purchase the Dropps for laundry and dishwashing. I love them. I also purchase a pack of baby boost for loads that may need a little extra. I will never have to load laundry detergent or dishwasher detergent from the store again. Yes! Super convenient and comes in small biodegradable boxes. No more HUGE plastic containers for me.

How are Dropps as far as the front loader mildew towels issue?
#18 Chris on 2018-07-16 14:09 (Reply)
Great idea but the pods dissolve and leak all over each other which makes even more dissolve. We’ve tried keeping them in an airtight container. We’re on our second 4 month supply and we canceled and will end up throwing them out.
