The Budget Babe x H&M's Long Live Fashion Campaign

This is a sponsored post with H&M.

H&M is doing something HUGE, you guys, and I'm so excited to be able to share this mind-blowing message! So here goes: ALL H&M stores now offer garment recycling collection services! Bring in any piece of clothing, from any brand, in any condition, and H&M will recycle it for you!

Need another incentive (besides saving the planet)?! You'll get a 15% off coupon for the item of your choice for each bag of clothes you donate (limit two bags per day).

Donate before March 31st to bump your discount up to 15% off your entire purchase, plus a chance to win some very cool prizes.

Garment recycling is just one crucial step that H&M is taking to be greener. I've told you about their Conscious Collection, and here are some fun facts:

  • H&M is the #1 user of organic cotton worldwide

  • 100 million liters of water are saved in denim production

  • 2.3 million garments donated to charities

  • 5 percent reduction in carbon emissions

For all the details and to get inspired, check out my "un-haul" video above – and DON'T LET FASHION GO TO WASTE!

Wondering what happens to all the clothes you donate? I know I do! Visit www.hmconscious.com to find out.

Thanks for the info! I have an H&M close by but I can never find anything I like, so, most likely, the coupon will not be an incentive for me.

Regardless, I've been discarding clothes that I know can't go (or shouldn't) to donation because they have a hole or, my biggest enemy, they have oil splatters from cooking (because I forget to wear my apron). Somehow throwing them away felt wrong so, I have been keeping them in a box, wondering what to do with them. But now there's a good alternative.

Great idea! I'll be sure to bring a bag of old clothes to H&M to get 15% off some new spring pieces!

Just wondering is H&M still ripping up and throwing away clothes from their stores instead of recycling/donating them? How is H&M recycling the clothes that are donated?

That website is really difficult to navigate! I couldn't find the info about what they are actually going to do with the clothes, just that they would recycle them. Into what? Can you provide more information?

Sure, there's more info at hm.com/longlivefashion

Here are some excerpts:

"The clothes are then shipped to the nearest processing plant, graded and hand-sorted. Zero waste is the goal. Items that are too worn and torn to be reused will be recycled and turned into raw materials and new products."

Recycled textiles get turned into everything from cleaning clothes for industrial use to damping and insulating materials for the auto industry.

It's actually very fascinating, I've read about textile recycling in "Overdressed" by Elizabeth Cline (reviewed here: http://www.thebudgetbabe.com/archives/5065-Overdressed-by-Elizabeth-Cline-A-Review.html)

Tons of what you drop off at places like Goodwill and Salvation Army also enter the complex circuit of textile recycling, FYI.

Hope this helps!

Clothes can be recycled and textiles not suitable for
producing new clothes can
be converted into new fibers and
non-woven fabrics. Through
recycling, the material is pulled
apart and processed into entirely
new materials and products
such as fleece.

Since it was discovered and made public that H&M was intentionally destroying good clothes I have not shopped there. I have my doubts about their recycling program. The more information you can provide about this recycling program would be appreciated.
