In this weekly column, I'm sharing luxe home decor tips and finds - for less! This week, we're talking makeovers on a budget. Visit my blog A Vintage Splendor for more ideas and inspiration.
As you know from this weekly series, a good looking home doesn't have to cost a fortune. Although home improvement projects and renovations take both time and money, small improvements make a big impact without a lot of investment.
Here are 10 ways to make your home great on a budget (under $50!):
1. If you're in a color slump or can't commit to changing an entire room's wall color, add some dimension by painting a door in your favorite hue. (Top left image via House of Turquoise )
2. House plants not only add life to your space, but they also help remove toxins from the air. I call that double duty decor! Beginner at house plants? Check out this guide to house plants to pick your right plant.
3. Trimwork from the store is expensive, but you can score one-of-a-kind trims at your local architectural salvage for well under $50. Add some trim to a fireplace or doorway between rooms. (Top right, via The Foo Dog Ate My Homework)
4. This is an easy one, but replace your window treatments! Add some pattern, bright color, or rich texture with a simple switch of your drapes.
5. Updating switchplates is an easy DIY that you can tackle over the weekend. Invest in a good can of brass or gold spray paint and you've got glam new switchplates.
6. Clutter will keep you home from ever feeling done. Design a drop spot for paperwork and buy a few storage bins to collect odds and ends. (Above left, middle row via The Daily Tonic)
7. My first apartment had zero cabinets so I invested $25 in shelves to create a functional and dreamy kitchen. The result was a gorgeous open shelving that helped me organize and display my vintage glassware collection. (Bottom right image via Domaine Home)
8. Replace knobs and pulls in the kitchen or bathroom. Visit your local hardware store and look in the closeout bin for great deals. Remember you can always paint if you don't like the color or finish!
9. Have a few hours to kill? DIY your own luxe marble art. It'll be a focal point in the space, plus a great conversation starter.
10. Refresh old furniture with a fresh coat of paint. Transform that old credenza or worn down wood chairs with punchy colors. (Bottom left image via Houzz)
