Look for Less: The Woven Handbag

Forever 21's must-have of the week is a deliciously oversized woven handbag, the sight of which instantly brought to mind a scrumptious bag I had seen by Cole Haan. I have not had the pleasure of owning anything by Cole Haan, a designer whose name conjures images of classic design, quality and luxury. Ya know, something my mom might carry. But really, I gotta hand it to them with this whole woven line of bags which I've seen advertised all over the place. They really caught my eye with their great texture and slight slouch, which makes them a little less rigid than some of their usual styles. Maybe it's the economy, or the changing of the seasons, but something keeps drawing me to quality and modern classics. Something less fleeting, less disposable, and rather, something that will last. But as poetic as that sounds, is a purse worth $600? If your answer, like mine, is "no," consider Forever 21's version, available in either brown or black faux leather for $29.80.

I dont know about the F21 version, BB. I have been coveting this bag for a while now. I just told the fella that IF I possessed the CH bag, I would not have to buy another handbag or shoe for the rest of my life. I know, blasphemy, yes - but it's REALLY nice handbag in either black or brown.

TexNYQueen: I say, if you want the Cole Haan, more power to you! I might be the queen of bargains, but I do value quality, craftsmandship and beauty. I love to admire from afar. Mostly, I lack the maturity to invest in a bag like this (it's an absolute classic, but will I still love it in 3 months?) and I lack the funds, haha! That's why I love showing both options in my posts. If you splurge, send us pics so we can live vicariously through you ;-)

Ya know, I like the slouchyness of the forever 21 version- not a fan of the CH one. Now there are other versions I may drool over, but not that one.

Gotta disagree a bit with this one. CH is one of those brands that creates luxury pieces that somehow just EXUDE luxury. The Denney up there looks posh, but the F21 version just doesn't capture the poshness. I think with really simple designs, it can be hard to knock them off ... because it's the design and materials that give the item its beauty.

OK, apparently feeling a bit verbose today ...

agree with Sal on this one. woven bags are not cheap to make anyway. it's no no buying man made leather bag for woven designs unless you have a rule not to buy any animal products.

I love the woven handbag look, but I don't like sacrificing quality for the sake of saving a buck. While the CH version is very expensive, I'd like to think it's worth the splurge. In this economy, you better last me a long time or you're not worth spending money on. lol.

This is one instance in which fake won't do. I love bargains, but I can't do fake leather, it just looks so cheap and bad (and cheap is not a bargain, it is a waste of money). Since I can't afford CH and this type of bag is a classic, this is where I would skip over to ebay and type "woven leather bag" and buy an old used one.

I own a CH woven bag just not the style show here. I think is a bag that could be used year after year without going out of style.
