Nothing to Wear Series: Foolproof Fall Outfit 2

Angie, author of the youlookfab.com fashion blog, recently wrote a stellar post outlining 10 casual outfit formulas for moms on the go—simple yet stylish fashion formulas that will work wonderfully for any gal on the move. Last week, I tackled formula #1 using budget-friendly items, and today I'm taking on formula #2 using mostly items under $100, with the exception of some of the boots which are worth saving up for or waiting for a sale:

Skinny jeans + long sleeved T + scarf + tall boots

Sirenista*

Rock-n-Roller

The Ingenue

* If these fashion personas sound familiar, it's because I've borrowed them from the book, Hollywood Intuition: It's What Separates Fashion Victims from Fashion Victors which I read at Target. Without buying. Shhh!

Are these looks you would wear?

Cheap Chic Coats Under $100: Fred Flare

Fred Flare at ShopStyle

Fred Flare is known for kitschy, one-of-a-kind gifts and accessories, but this season they are also serving up an impressive collection of affordable, fashion-forward coats. We all know that a great statement-making coat is a wardrobe essential for fall, and it's good to know you can find one without breaking the bank. (Need money for boots, after all.) Here are my some of my Fred Flare favorites, mostly under $100. The houndstooth beauty above is just $82!

Trend Alert: Capes and Capelets

Natalie Portman wore an ink blue Ferragamo double-breasted jacket with a decidedly cape-like silhouette to the Broadway opening night of Hamlet at the Broadhurst Theatre in New York City.

One of this season's most daring coat trends is the cape. Designers are always reinventing this old-school style to make it modern and relevant for today's fashionista (consider this cool city cape by Elizabeth and James or this showstopping cape by Derek Lam). Look for super-wearable coat styles, or short, cropped capelets that can be paired with jeans or a dress. If you're concerned about this trend's staying power, pick a budget-friendly piece like this military-inspired cape from ASOS ($59 on sale) or this adorable capelet from Forever for just $27.80. Would you wear a cape?
