Ask BB: Budget-Friendly Walking Shoes for Winter in NYC

I need some advice on shoe choice for a tourist's trip to NYC. I am going in early February and the forecast should be cold and rainy. I plan to do a lot of walking and would like to find a shoe that is comfortable enough to walk in, durable enough to withstand any rainy conditions, yet stylish enough to go from day to night (nothing dressy, but possibly a Broadway show). Any advice? —Melissa

It might sound boring, but I think a classic black boot by a reputable brand is your best bet. Something classic yet modern will keep your feet comfy and cozy for a full day of walking, climbing subway stairs and trudging through rain puddles, possibly even slush and snow. And you'll look stylish and put together whether you're going to an art museum, shopping in trendy boutiques or catching a show in the evening. There are lots of options out there, but here are 3 picks under $50:

Aerosoles Archive Stretch Boot, $39.99 at amazon.com

I have always had luck with Aerosoles. Their shoes are super comfy and durable, and you can wear them for 8 to 10 hours at a time. These boots got great reviews, and it's easy to see why: Classic, versatile, tasteful. Check the Aerosoles.com outlet section for even more fab deals.

Unlisted by Kenneth Cole Women's 'Saddle Up' Tall Riding Boots, $47.99 at overstock.com

For something with less heel and more edge, these riding boots from Kenneth Cole's more affordable line, Unlisted, will keep feet happy for hours. Again, Kenneth Cole is another brand I've had excellent luck with, so you can shop with some certainty that you will not be disappointed by your purchase.

Bandolino Neeko, $47.37 at 6pm.com

I've owned a couple pairs of Bandolinos over the years and they have never failed me. If tall boots aren't your thing, a low black ankle boot like the ones shown here are another fab option. You can wear them with dark bootcut jeans and a cute top and blazer for a stylish day to night look. Feet will be dry and pain-free, which means you will be a happy traveler.

Dear Readers: What are some versatile, comfortable shoes YOU would recommend that would work for winter in New York City?

Ask BB: What to Wear for a Weekend in Orlando

Would you please suggest an outfit for a long weekend getaway in Orlando, Florida? Something to explore Universal theme park in? I believe it's a bit chilly in Florida at the moment. —M

Parts of Florida have been experiencing unseasonably cold weather this winter, so I'd wear a trench and cardigan on the plane. These will keep you comfy should the sun decide to hide on your vacation.

Theme parks are notoriously casual but that doesn't mean you can't look cute. And there are plenty of nice restaurants, bars and nightclubs to entertain grownups in the evenings, so if you plan on going out, pack a cute top and dark jeans or black pants for such occasions.

Here's some inspiration, click any outfit for details on the items shown:

Outfit 1

Classic: A classic trench is a travel must-have that goes from day to night, sunny skies to thunderstorms. Red leather flats from the Gap are a comfy yet chic way to get around.

Outfit 2

Casual Cool: I can't wear Converse sneaks myself (not enough arch support), but thousands (perhaps millions?) of people swear by them for comfort and hipster style. Add a boyfriend blazer to cover up if it gets cold.

Outfit 3

Going Out: There's tons of nightlife in Orlando, both around the theme parks and even downtown. A pretty top and black pants is laid back yet still fun enough for partying.

Ask BB: What to Wear for a Wedding and Vacation in SoCal

I am going to Southern California the first week in February for a 4 or 5 day mini-vacation and wedding and have NO idea what to pack. Please help me out on what to pack and possibly outfit ideas and an idea of what to wear to the wedding—I'm lost! —D

When I'm packing for a trip, I think about the weather and the type of activities I plan on doing, then I lay out a few outfits, and finally, I edit. Pack items that you can wear at least twice. Items that go from day to night are even better.

Having said that, I follow a couple Southern California fashion bloggers (like Cupcakes & Cashmere and Karla's Closet), and those lucky girls seem to be able to wear just about anything this time of year! Still, the weather can be unpredictable, so pack an umbrella, trench, cardigan, blazer, scarf, tights and hat to prepare for chilly evenings or rainy days.

Other than that, I think you can have fun and be as fashion-forward or laid-back as you wanna be. Do what suits you! Here are 4 outfit ideas to get you started. Click any image to get details on all affordable items shown (you know I wouldn't tease you with out-of-reach pricey duds).

Outfit 1

A Formal Affair: For the wedding, why not get a head start on spring trends and try a bright frock dressed up with new neutrals? I think it's a fresh take on evening wear.

Outfit 2

Urban Boho: Pair edgy leggings with a slouchy beanie and chunky sweater for a look that's relaxed yet cool enough to blend in with any scene. Great for sightseeing.

Outfit 3

Casual Sexy: A bandage skirt exudes a sexy-siren vibe, so play it down with a casual button-down and sporty vest. Wear the same skirt with a tank-top later for night.

Outfit 4

Girly: Here's an Alexa-Chung-inspired look that's playful and fun yet wearable enough for a day of shopping. A blazer is the perfect layering piece to pack since it can go with jeans, skirts or dresses. Ditto on the cross-body bag!

Relief for Dry Winter Skin: What's Your Routine?

Neutrogena's Extra Gentle Cleanser leaves skin feeling soft and moist, rather than tight and dry.

A couple days ago I found myself watching AccentHealth Waiting Room TV at my doctor's office (just in for a routine check-up), and they did an interesting segment on finding relief for dry winter skin, so I took some notes to share with all of you. Might as well make the most out of a boring situation, right?

First, the common causes of dry skin:

  • Exposure to hot or cold dry air

  • Heating and/or air conditioning

  • Long, hot showers

  • Improper use of moisturizers

Jergens Natural Glow facial moisturizer glides on smooth and gradually gives skin a touch of non-streaky color, much like a light coat of foundation.

Simple tips for dry skin relief:

  • Apply moisturizer to damp skin, right after you shower.

  • Avoid antibacterial or deodorant soap

  • Drinking water, while vital for good health, does not relieve dry skin.

  • Use a mild cleanser applied gently with the pads of your fingers. Splash skin to rinse and pat dry. I use Neutrogena Extra Gentle Cleanser in the winter because it's non-comedogenic (like Cetaphil), fragrance free, and won't leave a filmy residue on your skin.

  • Use an oil-free moisturizer for your face. I've been using Jergens Natural Glow Healthy Complexion Daily Facial Moisturizer and I love it. I bought it back in August for our summer vacay to Quebec and have been using it ever since. I use it in addition to the Kiss My Face Olive/Aloe Natural Moisturizer that I wrote about here.

  • Wear sunscreen daily. The Jergens moisturizer contains SPF protection, so I'm covered.
