Tadashi Shoji Spring 2012 Runway Show

My first show at fashion week was Tadashi Shoji's Spring 2012 collection, and it was quintessentially spring from the first floral-inspired hand-painted silk linen frock to the last ethereal draped tulle and lace gown. You didn't need to read the show notes to know that the designer's inspiration was the regal tulip (I hadn't read them prior to speaking to the designer backstage, "The dresses looked like tulips!" I gleefully exclaimed. Talk about stating the obvious.)

Each dress looked like a watercolor gesture painting where a single brushstroke gives you the entire impression of the subject matter - stunning. Tadashi Shoji does pretty and feminine so well, why should he do anything else? Backstage I also asked the designer if he had any plans in store for a more affordable line of frocks (not that his evening gowns are entirely out of reach, you can find them quite reasonably priced on sale at Nordstrom), to which the designer smiled and said something to the effect of "yes, probably next year" and then, "Everyone knocks off my dresses, so we have to knock off ourselves!" Amen to that.

it looks like a lot of the runway dresses could transition well to "real life". I am especially love the bumble bee inspired black and yellow dress!

yes! definitely. the striped dresses also reminded me of something from alice in wonderland, pure fantasy, while the silhouettes were very wearable and ladylike.
