Yesterday I had the pleasure of going to see Confessions of a Shopaholic (great movie, I recommend it if you haven’t seen it) and it got me thinking: In what ways can women cut back in this economy in order to save some money? Like, reeeally save some serious cash?

A couple of years ago, when my own finances were particularly tight, I decided to start cutting and coloring my own hair. When I received really positive feedback about how my hair looked, I realized what a good idea it was, and I stuck with it. While this method of saving a buck may not be for everyone, I suggest toying with the idea at least for a moment to see if there’s a chance you can’t do at least one thing at home and save some cash.

When I began doing my own hair I used the internet as my guide. While this was daring at the time, things have ultimately changed with the popularity of how-to videos on YouTube. There are plenty of videos out there on how to style your own hair, and many of them are quite professional and informative. Best of all, these videos found online are free.

If you are wary of using an online video, you could always try the new DVD from Bring it Home Beauty. This DVD is a collection of informative videos that guide you through basic hair cutting, coloring and styling techniques. You won’t find yourself creating the latest and hottest hair styles from this DVD, but you will learn very basic techniques that can be built upon.

This is like the essentials of hair. In the haircuts section you will learn to cut men’s hair with shears and clippers, learn how to trim bangs and how to cut long hair to one length. In the coloring section you learn how to highlight hair using foils (which I had never known how to do before myself) and how to color your roots.

Bring It Home Beauty also has a section that gives instructions on how to style your hair, including French braids, creating two casual and two formal updos, and how to blow out your hair and curl it. This DVD is informative and will give any beginner some ideas for how to transition into the world of doing your own hair. Save money on your hair, and use it for more important things in life…like shoes.

Coloring your own hair is one of the best money-saving tricks - if you are comfortable enough. I used to get my hair professionally hilighted & would drop at least $120 each time, but I've been doing it myself for the past 4 years - & it only costs about $10 :-)

I think it's a great idea DIY hair! I did dye my hair cheaper than what the hair dressers would of cost me around $180 for my hair cut, blow wave and colour. Good idea I found colouring my own hair looks professional than I thought!
