Ask BB: Sophisticated Handbags on a Budget

I've been carrying this black patent leather Guess bowler for about a year now and I absolutely love it. However, I think it's time for a change of bag but still want something in a neutral tone—off white/cream, tan, brown, or even gray. Of course I want something that looks designer but without the hefty pricetag. I'm not big on online shopping and was hoping to see what you could suggest as being a trendy and sophisticated bag for a college girl. Thanks so much! —Haj

OK, so I hear you loud and clear about the online shopping—I prefer shopping in person myself—but if you're willing to take a chance, there's this great under-the-radar handbag designer called Melie Bianco which is sold primarily online that I think you will love. If you read fashion mags and blogs (including TBB), then you've probably heard of Melie Bianco before BUT the chances of you seeing another girl on campus carrying the exact same Melie Bianco bag are pretty slim. A strong incentive to shop online!

Most styles are under $100, which isn't dirt cheap, but Melie Bianco bags are well-made and look expensive. They don't have flashy logos and the styles are on-trend without being too trendy, meaning you'll enjoy these bags for years. Find them at baghaus.com, shopbareaccessories.com, shopecbc.com, and lulus.com, as well as big sites like Piperlime.com and Endless.com.

Here's a sampling of their bags to give you some idea of the available styles (my favorite du jour is the School Boy Tote in Navy)...

Anyone else a fan of Melie Bianco? What other designers would you recommend for cheap bags that don't look it?

I also like SR Squared by Sondra Roberts. It's a budget brand also available at the same online stores where you find Melio Bianco.

I checked out Endless.com for SR Squared and I fell in love with the Neon Clutch in pink. Thanks, Sandra for this designer!

I love discovering a new designer, thanks for the tip Sandra! I see a ton of SR Squared bags on Amazon that I am loving, many are well under $50 :-)

Another person named Sandra commenting on the same blog as me? What are the *odds*? lol

Try TJ Maxx, too. You can get a designer bag for a lot less. Also, I bought a Jessica Simpson Anaconda satchel for less than $100 in the spring and have been really impressed with the durability & versatility!

Amazon also sells them--for a little cheaper, it looks like.

I often overlook Amazon for fashion when in fact they usually have the lowest prices around (as you noted!). Another brand that's consistently lower on Amazon is American Apparel.

The Multi Woven Camera Bag is FAB-U-LOUS. Love it, as well as lots of the other styles; I might have to make a purchase for BTS myself!

Can you get to a decently stocked Marshalls? The one near me always has generic (or at least brands I haven't heard of) italian made leather bags for $100 or less. They also have some francesco biasia for $120-130 or less. I've heard good thing about TJMaxx too but have not been to check it out.

Otherwise I'd say department store outlets might be a good idea. Nordstrom rack frequently has leather for $100 or less. Also you could check out house brands - that the dept stores have made for themselves. Nordstroms house brand has cute things but they might be too conservative for you.

Brands that are cute that you might find good online sales for if you can't find something in person - the Sak- they have good clearance sales sometimes, maybe Lucky Brand sold through Macy's. Otherwise Overtock, smart bargains, amazon, bluefly and yoox would be my suggestiosn if you end up online. good luck.
