Does This Outfit Work? Nonie's Going-to-the-Theater Look

Reader Nonie is planning on wearing this black lace ruffle-tier dress with black peep-toe pumps to see a performance of Wicked this weekend, but she's not sure if it's appropriate for the occasion. "Do you have any suggestions or opinions in what way I should wear or should I wear this at all?" she asks.

My response? I think Nonie's look is fun, festive and totally appropriate! I might swap the brown/bronze beads for a longer, multi-strand necklace either with delicate chains or flirty pearls to play-up the feminine feel of the dress.

How cute!

I think I would wear a different necklace...but that's just a personal preference. Also, I think b/c of all the ruffles, it would look really pretty if she pulled her hair back b/c her pretty hair just blends in w/the pretty dress!

Have fun!

I would agree with this comment, a simple necklace would work better with the ruffles, and color clutch or shoes, would pop (but simple) also, hair pulled back elegantly would help set off the ruffles and look great for the theatre.

Agreed, the necklace is too chunky for an already busy outfit. Cute with the simple shoes though.

I definitely thinks this works especially since in New York City you can really get away with wearing anything and someone is wearing something more "out there." When I go to a show on Broadway I usually take the opportunity to dress up even though I know there will be many people there in jeans. Also, the ruffles on this dress definitely work for you since you are thin and can pull it off. Enjoy Wicked, it's GREAT!

The dress is beautiful, but it needs more attention. The shoes are also great. But a bun or a ponytail would fit better and a small necklace (I prefer gold, but silver would be also fine) or a little bit larger earrings.
Have fun!

I agree with Angela. Her hair blends too much with the dress. I don't know anything about the performance of 'Wicked'. This is probably a good dress for it unless it's a formal occasion. Love the shoes. :-)

i agree with BB about changing the necklace.

I would add a pashmina or wrap or go rock glam and add a cropped leather jacket - It will be cold in the theatre! Have fun :-)

So cute! Go for a smaller less heavy necklace, and it will be perfect! Love the dress! Have fun!

Gorgeous dress. Personally, I think this necklace would definitely look better with a longer dangly necklace, you already have a dress that has volume sideways, no need to echo that with a heavy short necklace. I love Carly's idea about a pashmina or a jacket of some sort. Since you are seeing Wicked, why not get into the spirit and add something green? Or if you prefer Gah-linda...PINK! Have fun!

Thanks guys for wonderful suggestions..my first choice of necklace was platinum finish chain with single diamond or delicate pearl necklace and do all black n silver accessories...

I dont have anything long that matches this dress..probably i could go some accessory shopping :-) and i'm def going to pull back my hair :-)..its just too long.. and im going to def carry a pashmina as its going to be cold out there

It’s cute, but it can be hot by adding some flair and a touch of color. Black shoes definitely work, would be cute with some blue-green shoes to pull a color from the necklace. I recommend a waist belt to give a little break in the ruffles, and show a flirt of curve. To compliment the outfit, hair pulled back or swept up in a sassy up do would show off the playfulness of the dress (with or without the belt).

I think it's ALMOST perfect for Wicked, I love that dress. I would just lose the necklace, something more delicate or darker would be better...IMHO!

I agree about the change of necklace!

Very cute dress! I would probably add a pop of color, either in the jewelry or the shoes, but that's just my style. I know a lot of people love the all black look. ;-)

I agree change of necklace and hair pulled back

Enjoy!

adorable outfit, but I'd say a little over-dressed! I go see Broadway shows a lot and nowadays it's pretty casual...I've seen people get away with jeans and sneakers!

Lovely dress--not your everyday LBD. It almost has a deco era feel to it (which is nice). I would add color and/or sparkle to it. A deco (vintage or repro) necklace of rinestones (either clear, garnet, or blue) that would lay flat against the collarbone/neck area would look great. And then, b/c I personally like the combo of dressed up and dressed down, I would wear a well-fitted jean jacket over it all.

I would love to know where she got her shoes! Being from nyc myself, id say that may be a little too dressed up for a broadway show. but then again, mainly tourists frequent those shows and im not sure how good of a feel they have for proper nyc night attire.

but pleaseee tell me where you got your shoes!!

Definitely change the necklace, pull your hair back in a chignon or other updo, and add a rich colorful pashmina.
#17 Liz on 2009-07-24 19:56 (Reply)
way too formal. it's just wicked, not the freakin' opera.
#18 infernalmachine on 2009-07-24 20:17 (Reply)
Lose the necklace altogether. Pull you hair back and wear long, dangle earrings (preferably sparkly).

Changing the shoes to ones that are hard, kick ass would make the outfit edgy and less sweet.

Anything goes in NYC.

The dress is adorable, but just to warn you, please are usually WAY dressed down for Broadway shows these days. Although, there will be some people dressed up.
#20 Maggie on 2009-07-25 07:55 (Reply)
Typo.... I meant **people** are usually way dressed down
#20.1 Maggie on 2009-07-25 07:56 (Reply)
This is cute. IF you are in the mood to dress up, then dress. People don't dress up for anything anymore. I agree with BB, loose or lighten the necklace and pull back the hair. Have fun!
