Off the Rack: Spring/Summer Shoes at DSW

Clockwise from top-left: Strappy studded heels from Zigi Soho ($59.95); Cut-out details on real-leather Steve Madden Luxe Collection heels ($42 on clearance); Metallic/Python gladiator flats by Modern Vintage ($129.95 - ouch!); Gucci-inspired platform heels (also similar to the YSL Tribute heel) by Diba ($49.95).

A few days ago I checked out my nearest DSW to see what was in store for spring, and I must say I was very impressed. While the most current styles weren't priced that much lower than what you'd pay at a department store, they had a fantastic selection and you can always wait for a sale (or sign up for the DSW rewards club online or in-store to get coupons via email and snail mail.) I tried on just about every shoe in the clearance section and ended up buying a pair of Calvin Klein black leather platform pumps from $40, marked down 80 percent (you do the math, hehe). Incidentally, those are the only shoes I did not photograph yet, that pic will have to come. Do you have love for DSW? What's your strategy for scoring great deals at this popular shoe warehouse?

Reader Tip: Kayden Utility Boot from Target

Xhilaration at ShopStyle

A little while back, a reader tipped me off to these Xhilaration 'Kayden' Utility Boots, which she said had real leather uppers and were quite comfortable. I found them at my local Target store, and this weekend I bought them on sale for $17.48 down from $34.99. A fellow shopper commented on how cute they looked and said "Those so don't look like Target shoes"—meant to be taken as a compliment, of course!

Kayden Utility Boot from Target

I've been wearing them for the past two days (see my photo above) and they are worth every penny. If you're in the market for a warm weather boot—something rugged to toughen up a girly, floral dress, or a transitional shoe that you can wear with shorts when it's still kinda chilly—give the 'Kayden' a shot!

Off the Rack: Spring Bags at Target

Just about every spring handbag trend can be found for less at Target: There are eye-catching croc-print handbags, casual-cool striped beach bags, fun floral totes and neon-lined hobos with a retro '80s flavor, to name just a few.

So what's hot and what's not?
  • Your best bet: A canvas beach bag in a stylish print, like the striped ones above. Perfect for trips to the farmer's market, beach and lunch with friends.
  • What to avoid: Overly trendy snakeskin and ruffle-detail bags that look like plastic (but were trying to look like leather). If you like these trends, try them out in a shoe instead.

Here are some pics I took at my local store. I kinda wish they had some more all-white options that didn't look so...cheap. Not every bag is a hit, but at these prices, you can probably find at least one new bag to add to your summer repertoire. What do you think of this season's Target bags so far?

Reader Request: Matt Bernson Barracuda Sandal for Less

Matt Bernson at ShopStyle

Today's "look for less" was requested by a reader who says she loves these Matt Bernson Barracuda sandals, but isn't loving the price—they're $175 at Piperlime.com. Celebs like Sarah Jessica Parker, Miley Cyrus and Leighton Meester are all fans of Matt Bernson, too, a brand that distinguishes itself by blending luxurious details with comfortable styling. Each pair is hand cut leather and "soulfully made in Brazil," says their website (find out more about Matt Bernson shoes at mattbernson.com), which explains the higher prices.

For those on a budget, here are some alternatives that won't break the bank. (Click any image for details.)

Felix Rey for Target: Love It or Leave It?

Felix Ray for Target Handbag Collection

The Felix Rey for Target handbag collection hit stores March 29, bringing a "colorful, beach-inspired vibe" from handbag designers Lily Band and Sulaika Zarrouk. The collection consists of straw, canvas or nylon totes, clutches and beach bags featuring sea life motifs such as fish, coral and shells, which range in price from $19.99 to $49.99. I think this collection is too cute for words, and I'll probably pick up the large fish tote. It's big and roomy and well-made, perfect for toting summer essentials to the beach. The Felix Rey for Target collection will be available at select Target stores nationwide and on Target.com through June 14, 2009. Did this line meet your expectations?
