Off the Rack: Walmart's Spring Fashion Fail

This past weekend I make a quick trip to Walmart to see what was new for spring in the fashion department, and I have to say I was pretty disappointed. There were a few cute things but nothing worth going out of your way to buy. The Miley Cyrus collection continues to be a surprising source of cute, cheap pieces like the pink ruffle cami (shown above), just $12. Pair it with jeans, some heels and a blazer and you have a respectable going-out look. Norma Kamali's line continues to baffle me - what's with the oversized sweatshirts, camo pants and kooky prints? I struggled to find 5 items suitable for sharing: A black trench ($35), black lightweight parka ($35), leopard wrap dress ($20), pinstripe shirtdress ($20) and striped v-neck tee. Norma Kamali for Walmart has really lost its steam and it's a darn shame.

Have you found any budget-fashion gems at Walmart recently?

Off the Rack: Spring Fashions at J. Crew

Since I live in a college town, there's a J. Crew store just minutes from my home. Although it's not the cheapest place to shop, the quality is there and the sales are great. I routinely stop by just to see what's new and gather inspiration. For spring, J. Crew is showing lots of casual basics that will integrate easily into your existing wardrobe: Striped tops, chambray shirts, madras plaid and soft colors like sky blue, honeysuckle pink, coral and lemon yellow. If nothing else, new-for-spring nail polish shades from Essie are worth a trip: Milkyway, Peep Show, Au Naturale, Flawless and Cute as a Button will all have you swooning. Also, be sure to check the sales racks: I tried on a vibrant coral cardigan, cool cargo jacket, striped tank, floral shorts and more, all marked down under $50.

Off the Rack: March Fashions at Gap

Yesterday I stopped by my local Gap store to pick up some City Flats, which were unfortunately sold out in my size. It's entirely understandable considering these stylish shoes are just $39.50 full price and my store had certain colors marked down as low as $9.97. Can't be beat.

Since I was there, I took a gander at the latest spring offerings. My store was loaded with new spring basics like soft tees, draped cotton tops, fresh denim and updated pant silhouettes in mostly neutral hues like blush, white, tan and stone. What kept things interesting was - you guessed it - pops of color, specifically coral. That color is everywhere.

Many styles were already on sale; I picked up a white button down blouse for $30. I was really impressed by a couple of amazing pieces that looked totally designer - an abstract blue floral dress, tribal print shorts and asymmetric gray brushstroke dress were all standout pieces, especially for the price. The handbags, which I've been ogling online, looked great in person too.

Off the Rack: LC Lauren Conrad for Kohl's March Highlights

On Friday, I scouted out the spring offerings from the LC Lauren Conrad collection at my local Kohl's, and once again, I found myself falling under LC's spell. With names like Coastal Bohemia, Shabby Chic and High Tea describing each set of looks, the LC Lauren Conrad for Kohl's collection is unapologetically girly. Feminine details, florals and vintage-inspired styling create a casual ladylike look. The palette of nature-inspired shades like teal blues, sweet blushes, soft lemon yellows and earthy ivory felt effortless and easy-to-wear.

There were lots of lightweight cardigans, pretty blouses and skinny jeans that you could mix and match for everyday wear. Standouts for me included a crochet-trim blouse (sale $34.99), supersoft navy twill leggings (sale $24.99), and two of the most adorable dresses ever (sale $41.99 each). I just wanted to run through a field of tall grass with a red balloon or something, wearing those dresses. Like I said, I was under her spell. Then I snapped out of my reverie and left empty-handed. As much as I loved everything in the moment, I didn't particularly need anything. If I'm still pining for that dusty rose dress tomorrow, I'll go back for it.

Off the Rack: Leather Wrap Bracelets, Stackable Rings at Target

An inexpensive way to update your spring look is with a few new pieces of jewelry, and Target has some amazing options under $20. Think layered wrap bracelets, a boho statement ring or a mod white watch. My heart skipped a beat when I saw the shiny assortment of new wrap bracelets at my local store, ranging in price from $14.99 to $18.99 each. Rather than being all-out edgy, the latest crop of bracelets are chic designer-inspired pieces that remind me of accessories by Burberry, Tory Burch and CC Skye. Other highlights included some delicate stackable rings and a charm necklace that looked a lot like Alex and Ani. If you're planning a trip to Target this weekend, stop by the jewelry section and let me know what you like.
