Ask BB: What to Wear for a Fashion PR Interview

I am a sophomore at the University of South Florida. I recently got really great news - I will be interviewing for an internship with one of NYC's top fashion PR firms. My interview is in early December, and I have NO IDEA WHAT TO WEAR! I do not know how the weather will be, how professional I should get (versus how chic I should look), etc. Since it is a high fashion firm, I have to look perfectly put together (keep in mind I am on a budget). Please help! —Meghan

First, do your homework. Find out everything you can about how people at the company dress. If you can follow the company on Twitter, do it. Twitpics and tweets can provide lots of clues about the office culture and dress code. (Just don't say anything like "I read allll your tweets!" during the interview. Might come across as a bit stalker-ish.)

Ask BB: Can I Wear Nude Pumps in the Winter?

I have some [nude pumps] which got a lot of wear to many weddings this summer, but are they too light-colored and summery to wear now, in November? —K in the comments

Nude shoes, which I define as any shoe that closely matches your skintone, thereby "blending in" with your skin and making your legs look miles long, can be worn year-round for their leg-lengthening effects.

For fall and winter, think about pairing your nude heels with this season's most alluring party looks, like sequins, classic black or gemstone hues. Store your neons, floral prints and other summery dresses until the spring. xoBB

Ask BB: How to Wear Desert Boots

I bought the Target "Khadeja" desert boots (below) after thinking about them for weeks. But now I don't know what to wear with them. If I wear socks, are they supposed to show? And then how long should the pants be that I wear with them? I'm wondering if I am cool enough to pull these off! —Julianne

This is a great question, as there are a lot of similar lace-up boots in stores right now and styling them can be a bit challenging. I think the trick to pulling them off (and I definitely think you can!) is to make sure the styling looks intentional. If your socks show, make sure they coordinate with the rest of your look.

Here are 6 ways to wear your desert boots for reference:

1. With tights: Wear your desert boots or other low profile lace-up booties with tights and an above-the-knee skirt or dress. Sweater tights in dark colors seem to work best.
2. With socks: Pick a chunky sock in a wool or cashmere blend and kinda scrunch them down a bit. Experiment to find the sock that works for your legs.
3. With skinny jeans: You can completely cover the top of the shoe with a skinny jean or legging. Pick a dark sock in a hue that matches the color of your jeans so that if they show when you sit, they won't visually break up that line.
4. With a tightly rolled cuff: Here we see the jeans have been rolled up just a bit so as not to cover the top of the boot, but there's still really no sock line visible.
5. With a loosely cuffed pant: Here we have a rolled cuff on a chino or khaki pant, which is wider than the ankle, and the ankles are bare. No socks needed.
6. With a flare-leg or boot cut jean: The simplest option is to just cover much of your shoe with a flare or boot cut jean. Totally legit, although you won't get to show off your cool shoes quite as much.

Which look is your favorite? How do you wear desert boots or other lace-up ankle boots?

Ask BB: Where to Get Cheap, Stylish Scarves

Is there a good place online or in stores to get nice big full scarves that won't totally use up my fashion budget? I love them, but I also love variety! —Courtney

Moments after reading your question, I got an email from a company called Happy Scarf (www.happyscarf.com) - talk about timing! As a fashion blogger, I get a LOT of solicitations from brands, most of which are useless, but sometimes a friendly email from a relevant brand is an effective way for me to learn about lesser known or new boutiques and share the news with you guys. Anyways, I clicked on over to their site and was happily impressed.

From lightweight summer scarves, to 100% wool winter scarves, oversized styles and even some capes and wraps, Happy Scarf seems to have it all. Most scarves are priced between $20 and $30, and there's a great clearance section showcasing scarves for just $12. Be sure to look at the fabric content so you know what you're getting. FYI, I've never ordered from Happy Scarf myself, nor did they pay me to write this post or anything like that, but they look like a great new source for affordable scarves online. If you order from them, let me know how it goes.

Of course, there's a ton of other places to get scarves. If you happen to live in a big city like NYC or you'll be traveling to one, take advantage of the street vendors. Super cheap and lots of options.

I just picked up a fab scarf at H&M in Barcelona (everyone in that city wears a scarf, EVERYONE). H&M has a good selection right now - most styles are under $15 and come in the latest colors and prints. I also love the scarves at American Apparel, TJ Maxx and Marshalls. Sometimes you can get a pure cashmere scarf at one of these off-price retailers for less than $40. That's pretty much all I'll wear during the bitter winter months, nothing keeps you warmer so it's worth every penny.

I'll pay more for an oversized scarf in wool, cashmere or silk, but otherwise, there's no reason to spend a lot on a scarf. Some cheap scarves look expensive and vice versa. Go for colors and prints you love in fabrics that feel good against your skin. xoBB
