Beautry Review: Sally Hansen Nail Polish in Commander in Chic

Beautry Review: Sally Hansen Nail Polish in Commander in Chic

Here's me wearing two coats of polish on an overcast day, photographed outdoors without the flash.

Chanel's new spring nail colors—specifically Chanel Particuliere Le Vernis Nail Colour—has everyone scrambling to find the perfect mushroom, taupe or putty nail polish for less, which led me to test out Complete Salon Manicure Nail Polish in Commander in Chic by Sally Hansen ($7.99 at Ulta.com). I purchased mine for $6.99 at Target.

I definitely agree with readers who tried this polish before me—the brush is fantastic because it's a little wider and flatter than most brushes, allowing for smooth, even and easy application. But the color is rather sheer, so three coats are required for full coverage. I get really impatient with nail polish, so I just applied 2 coats (3 on my thumbs, haha).

The subtle, sophisticated color is flattering and looks best on shorter nails. It looks different in different lighting situations, of course, but overall it has that slightly purplish-grey-taupe look I was going for. I would like to try something that's a little less glossy, and a little more creamy, though shine is good for hiding imperfections. I feel like I have to be super careful when applying matte colors as these tend to show every flaw.

Here are some more Chanel-inspired colors to choose from, recommended by your fellow readers!

Nice! I may have to pick a bottle of that up because I've been looking for a nice putty color.

Haha, I have to say, I think you're right - that color would look terrifying on my very long nails. I have to go for super-subtle colors unless I want to be REALLY SHOCKING. And get accused of wearing fake nails because people never noticed them when they were unpolished. O_o;

Do you have any suggestions for fast-trying or non-stinky polishes? I find I'm too sensitive to the smell of your average polish these days.

I hear you on the nasty nail polish smell, had to paint mine outside (which oddly enough seem to help them dry faster because it's so cold out!)

I've been meaning to try Karma Organic nail polish, available at www.TraTutti.com, if I test it I'll let you know!

Great color! I don't think Chanel polish is better than any other polish either - mine always chips after like a day.

OPI has a Sephora exclusive color just like this called "metro chic". They have the regular glossy version and recently released a matte version. One of my favorite shades of all time

Ok I broke down and decided to get a taupe like polish. I got the Sally Hansen Insta-dri in Hurry Honey. It's a little less gray but a very pretty taupe color.

I saw this in PeopleStyle and what a surprise when I saw it on my favorite blog the other day. Well, on those recommendations, I went and purchased the Sally Hensen...Love the brush, love the color. I have to comment because I was concerned that the color was really best on fair or Caucasian women. Well, I am a darker skineed Black women (think Kerry Washington)and the color is perfect for me too!!! ;-) Thank you BB!!!

I just found the EXACT same shade (held the bottles side by side) called Steel Grey for Rimmel's Lasting Finish Pro line (claims to last up to 10 days). The brush is the same too...which is lovely because I love how easily Sally Hansen goes on. Better yet...only $3.49 :-)

That putt-ish Polish works well on short nails. Definitely it's working for me.
Now I can't wait to try out the gold foil on nails for an exotic look. Hot this spring for sure. See my nail art designs at naillo.com(Maya20).

I went to my local Target today to look for this shade...to no avail! :-( I suppose I may have to go to a Sally store!

I just picked up a great taupe-y putty color from MAC yesterday called Wham Bam Glam. It's from their new Riveting Collection. It's a matte polish that's so great. Definitely recommend. It retails for $12.

Forever 21 Love & Beauty nail polish has the BEST putty shade called simply "taupe"- and it's only $2.80!

I love this color, I've been using it for months. It looks great on my light olive toned skin, but also on my fair skinned friends. I get tons of compliments on it too.
