Ask BB: What to Wear for Engagement Photos

Photography: Caroline Tran Photography, CarolineTran.net via theknot.com

I am having some trouble figuring out what to wear for my engagement shoot that's coming up in 3 weeks. I can have 2 outfits—I was thinking one casual and one dressy. I don't know if you have done this before, but I thought it would be helpful for us engaged girls! —Jessica

Consider the location where you'll be shooting and the mood you want to create, then pick clothes to match. Browse sites like www.weddingchannel.com and www.theknot.com for inspiration. No two couples are alike, so no two engagement photos will be the same. Be yourself, be comfortable and the photos will come out beautifully.

Here are 3 outfits inspired by photos I liked on theknot.com, recreated using budget friendly items! Click any item for more details.

OPTION 1: THE INSPIRATION...

THE LOOK...

This timeless look is a little retro, very romantic and totally relaxed. You could wear the heels for more formal shots, then ditch them and go barefoot for a more casual look. Consider the fashion "moments" that the photographer might capture, for example, a closeup of a pretty, feminine headband. Have your guy wear a tie in a color that compliments your look without being too matchy-matchy.

OPTION 2: THE INSPIRATION...

THE LOOK...

Don't avoid prints entirely if you love them—as you can see in the photo above, a colorful geometric print looks fantastic against a simple background and speaks to this couple's personality which reads fun, upbeat and urban. Rather than changing outfits, the couple moved from a formal pose to just goofing around on a bike. Love it!

OPTION 3: THE INSPIRATION...

THE LOOK...

You can't beat a nice top and your favorite jeans or pants for a clean, laid-back look. Here, I've picked a not-so-basic white tee with tone-on-tone flower detailing to make it special. Add interest with colorful flats and dangling earrings so that once again, the photographer can capture little visual vignettes that will personalize your photos and make them more memorable. Put on your best smile and you're all set!

What do you think makes a great engagement shoot outfit?

I like the first outfit (although the picture is awful). In the last picture, the girl looks great and the guy looks WAY too casual, he should have on a button-up at the very least. My favorite engagement pictures are B&W with black tops on a black background.

I love the first outfit!! You (hopefully) only get married once, so why not dress up a little for every part of it? The polka dot dress is fun as well as pretty!

Wow. You two look amazing! Your clothes enhanced the photos (love the pink and pearls!), you looked natural, comfortable, sexy and the chemistry between you too was really captured by the photographer. I'm bookmarking that page for future reference! Thanks for sharing :-)
