Ask BB: Cute & Comfortable Bridal Shoes

I have recently been in a traumatic car accident (hit by a drunk driver), and I am on the mend now. I have had to be off my feet for nearly 5 months due to broken bones, specifically my left femur, left and right knee caps, and right tibia/fibula (right ankle). I am not able to wear heels any more due to the stiffness of my right ankle, and all of my clothes no longer fit because I have lost so much weight due to inactivity for 5 months. … I have a wedding coming up (it had to be pushed back because of the accident—and I refused to go down the aisle in a wheelchair or on crutches), so are there any flat shoes you could recommend I wear in my wedding dress? I had planned on wearing these gorgeous Badgley Mischka heels, but now that's out of the question. Anything you could recommend would be wonderful! Thank you! —Liz

I'm so sorry to hear about your unfortunate accident and the pain it's caused you. Hopefully I can suggest some stylish shoe options that will make you feel beautiful and help you enjoy your special day as you move on with your life and start a new beginning, filled with health, love and happiness.

The first thing that came to my mind is that many brides today are intentionally opting for comfortable shoes over painful heels because they want to feel as good as they look on their wedding day, so you're not alone! There are dozens of gorgeous options to choose from and you won't have to sacrifice style for comfort.

1. A classic white ballet flat is always a chic option, here's one with a quilted pattern and bow detail to give it that extra bit of glamour and interest:

2. Pick a shoe in a color that matches your bridesmaids dresses (I was just in a wedding, in fact, where the bride wore purple satin flats to match our purple crepe bridesmaid dresses, so cute!).

3. Make your shoes your "something blue," from regal navy to cheerful sky blue. This will give you plenty more options to choose from beyond white and ivory.

4. A stunning metallic flat is sure to turn heads, splurge on this pair from Juicy Couture that's covered in sequins and embellished with a flower—you can't help but smile when you see these!

5. Go the flip-flop route! This pair by J. Crew is simply adorable and inexpensive, too. I have been to more than one wedding where the bride wore flip-flops. Go for what makes you happy!

Other options include a low wedge peep-toe pump or dressy flat sandal. I hope this helps! Best of luck and congratulations. —BB

I wouldn't fret one bit about flat shoes for your wedding!
How many weddings have I been to where the bride ends the evening in bare feet because her feet hurt from heels?

Plenty!

isn't it in the remake of father of the bride where steve martin runs a shoe company and makes special bridal tennis shoes for his daughter? obviously those shoes were super early 90s in style, but i think the right bride could totally pull of some white keds. quirky definitely, but i guess if its hidden, what does it matter? if they show, the flats you show are perfect i think. as for me, one day if and when i get married, i will wear flip flops hands down. wore them to all my graduations and important events, so why stop at my wedding?
hope your wedding is an amazing day Liz!

I would never dream or recommend wearing flip-flops to a special occassion, especially a formal one. It just looks innapropiate and shows that the person is too lazy or slovenly to wear something decent. Flat shoes for a wedding or other special occasion are perfectly fine, though, as long as they're clean and stylish.

I really like the white quilted pair. Reminds me of something Chanel. The navy flats are a really nice color, I like the satiny finish. I think a low wedge would be cute too. I'm not so sure about the flip flops though...

Hope you get better soon, Liz, and have a great wedding. :-)

First, I'm so sorry to hear about your accident, Liz. No matter what shoes you wear I'm sure everyone will be in agreement that they are happy you're around to walk down the aisle!

That being said, my sister has never been a hell-wearer. On her wedding day she wore gorgeous gold flats that wrapped up her calves slightly. It tied in beautifully with her champagne colored Disney-inspired dress. Another thing to keep in mind is the length of your dress. Is anyone going to be able to see your shoes long enough to judge them? Either way, I'm sure you will look gorgeous in whatever you decide! Let us know. :-)

I wore flat shoes for my wedding - I bought the Benjamin Adams Renee shoe from My Glass Slipper. They were expensive, but very comfortable and I loved that they had satin and some bling.

A little unconventional but what about TOMS? http://www.toms.com/wedding-collection
They donate a pair to children in need! What a way to give back on your special day!

Hope you are feeling good as new in no time! I've been looking for flats too for my wedding dress. So far, I've found cute flats on Esty.com, Yoox.com, and Dessy.com. Good luck and best wishes :-)

Liz, I too was hit by a drunk driver, and I broke my right femur and right foot! And I'm finally getting married in Feb 2011. I can't wear heels either but the wedding is in Hawaii so I'm just gonna wear flip-flops. Anyway, just wanted to say hi and let you know there's someone else out there who knows what this is like...so, good luck and God bless. :-)
