60 Second Beauty: Burt's Bees All-Natural Lip Shine and Lip Gloss

Burt's Bees lip shine and lip gloss review

I have been trying to use more natural products now that I'm expecting, so I was eager to review the Burt's Bees Lip Glosses and Lip Shines that recently landed on my desk. These 100% natural lip glosses and shines contain no petrochemicals, phthalates, parabens or sodium lauryl sulfate, and are not tested on animals. In other words, if you inadvertently eat these pout-prettying-products, you don't have to fret. Fun fact: According to Burt's Bees, a woman consumes an average of 6 lbs of lipstick in her lifetime. Yum! So let's see how these all-natural lip glosses stack up, shall we?
What they say: Burt's Bees Lip Gloss ($8.99, 0.2oz): A revolution in vibrant color and pearlescent gloss that doesn't skimp on nourishing moisture. Inspired by the seasons and formulated with 100% natural ingredients, the new Lip Glosses capture the beauty of dynamic nature in a tube. Infused with moisturizing botanical oils and Beeswax, the glosses nourish and soften while delivery long-lasting, rich color. Available in twelve different shades: Autumn Haze, Fall Foliage, Sweet Sunset, Sunny Day, Ocean Sunrise, Rosy Dawn, Spring Splendor, Summer Twilight, Evening Glow, Ruby Moon, Nearly Dusk and Starry Night.

Burt's Bees Lip Shines ($6.99, 0.5oz): A breakthrough 100% natural formula that gives lips a wash of sheer, glassy color and nourishing hydration. While some conventional formulas can leave lips sticky or worse, parched, Burt’s Bees harnesses the power of nature to give your pout a little pop of color and lustrous shine that feels great and helps care for your lips. Available in six expression-inspired shades: Whisper, Blush, Wink, Flutter, Pucker and Smooch

What I thought: Try as I might to be objective, it's impossible for me not to love something that's 100% natural paired with a friendly, melodic name like "Burt's Bees."

The lip shines are juicy and provide lots of shine without feeling sticky. Each has a super subtle scent that's non-chemically and vaguely reminiscent of strawberries. They won't dry out your lips but you will need to reapply often, especially after eating or drinking. Wayward hairs will stick to your lips with this stuff.

The lip glosses have the subtlest hint of shimmer, with a thicker consistency than the shines. The glosses are possibly a tiny bit drying (they almost don't last long enough to tell) but provide gorgeous, natural-looking color and/or shine. The super subtle scent is more like wax than fruity but it doesn't linger or offend the senses.

Here's my take on the 6 specific shades I got to try:

1) Ruby Moon is a gorgeous berry hue with a touch of shimmer. I didn't expect to like the darker shades but I loved this color. You'll need a mirror to apply it accurately. But something about the formula stains your lips every so gently and spreads evenly so you feel like you're getting a perfect pout with each application.

2) Fall Foliage looks a bit like a bronzy peach in the tube but basically just adds shine to your lips. I expected to like this gloss the most but wish it had more pigmentation. Still, it's a great foolproof way to add shine. No mirror needed.

3) Starry Night is a rich plum. This was the only shade that proved a bit too dark for my complexion but I'm sure it would work on lots of other skin tones beautifully.

4) Blush is a soft pink that gives lips a luscious wet-effect with just a hint of pink. Perfect for everyday. Layer over your favorite lip liner for night.

5) Pucker is a rosy pink that enhances your lips natural lip color. Mostly shine with a touch of color.

6) Smooch surprised me with its rich berry hue that felt sexy, not demure (as berry hues can be). I need a mirror to apply this one just because the color is so noticeable but I love, love, love it.

The bottom line: Burt's Bees glosses and shines are lovely, from the pretty packaging to the nuanced, natural-looking colors, and pleasant non-toxic formulations.
