Beauty Review: Maybelline Define-A-Lash Mascara

Maybelline Define-A-Lash MascaraMascara is my one daily must-have makeup product, but I'm not married to any one brand in particular. So when my last tube of Clinique Naturally Glossy Mascara ran out, I embraced the opportunity to try something new. At Target, I picked up new Maybelline Define-A-Lash Mascara in Very Black because I was drawn to the pretty chartreuse container. (Lately I've been obsessed with this color and other shades of green, from bath towels to bowls full of Granny Smith apples.) Picking a product based solely on the packaging isn't my usual modus operandi, but in this case it proved effective.

Maybelline Define-A-Lash Mascara

A close-up view of the Maybelline Define-A-Lash brush reveals dozens of teensy tiny bristles that define and coat each lash.

This mascara is awesome. It goes on smooth, coats my lashes evenly, and truly lengthens and separates each lash as it dries, which is exactly what I look for in a mascara. Even if a couple of lashes are stuck together as you're applying this stuff, they somehow magically separate as the mascara dries. Very cool.

Oooh! It's flexible!

The flexible rubbery brush kinda threw me off at first, but once I got used to it, it was a breeze to use. In fact, I think I may prefer this brush to more rigid ones. Maybelline Define-A-Lash doesn't smudge or flake (I would know, I wear hard contacts), and it washes off easily with warm water.

I'd definitely recommend this mascara to a friend (like you!) and I'll definitely be buying another one when this tube runs out.

Shop it: Maybelline Define-A-Lash Mascara, Very Blackicon, $7.95 at Drugstore.com

Good to know! I was in Target the other day perusing the makeup aisle for some new mascara, but came away empty-handed. Just wasn't sure what to get, since the last few mascaras were too dry (making my eyelashes feel super brittle), or too wet (so when I closed my eyes, the mascara ALWAYS smudged!). I will definitely be heading back there to pick this one up :o).

I rarely wear mascara, but it sounds like when my current one runs out, I should try Define-A-Lash! That flexible brush is awesome. :-)

Thanks for the review. I'm always looking for a good mascara. Any chance we could get the lashes in a with-mascara shot paired with a without-mascara shot?

I'll try to take this shot for you but in the meantime, check out the beautiful blogger Cupcakes and Cashmere, who also says she uses Define-A-Lash mascara:

I used Maybelline for a while (a different mascara though) and it was pretty runny, so I stopped using Maybelline altogether. Maybe I should go back and try this one out!

I started using this mascara after I saw it was one of Allure's "Editor's Picks" for best mascara of 2008 and it's awesome! I doubt I'll be going back to my pricier mascara when my current tube of Define-A-Lash runs out. Great review on a great product!

i usually use more expensive mascaras from sephora or department stores but in an effort to save money i also picked this mascara up on my latest target trip :-). Im definitely a fan and now realize it's totally unecessary to spend $20+ on mascara :-)

i've been using this mascara for probably about a year now and LOVE it! i recently bought a tube of 'great lash' only to replace it with a new tube of 'define-a-lash' soon after b/c it was too wet. now i know i will never go back :-) a word of warning though, i bought the waterproof formula for a friend's wedding and i hated it - felt like plastic on my lashes. so if you're going to use it (which i highly recommend), stick to the orignal. :-)

I have been using this one for over 3 months and I love it. I think I will stick with this brand

I got some of this, I liked it, but not more than some of the usual mascara that I buy.

I'm so mad I just bought some CoverGirl professional to be disappointed yet again! I will go check this out soon. I did happily buy Revlon's Beyond Natural foundation, it's amazingly accurate and light, but why only 1 oz? Check it out...
