What Are the Best Budget-Friendly Hair Care Products for Curly Hair?

Phytodefrisant Botanical Hair Relaxing Balm straightens hair without harsh chemicals. ($26 for 3.3 oz at Sephora.com)

I have naturally wavy hair so it takes a bit of work for me to make it look good curly (and even more work to make it straight!). The gels and mousses I've been using from the drugstore are either too light and leave my curls frizzy and fluffy, or they're too hardcore and leave my curls crunchy and stiff-looking. Do you have any budget-friendly recommendations for a product that will leave my curls defined but still looking natural? Thanks! —BK

I'm a fan of all the Sunsilk products because they're cheap and work well (read our review here). If I want to splurge, I'll get Phytodefrisant Botanical Hair Relaxing Balm ($26 for 3.3 oz at Sephora.com), which was recommended to me by a shi-shi hair stylist years ago. A little goes a long way!

As for curls, I'm no expert as my hair is fine, slightly wavy and prone-to-frizz in the summer, but not curly. Funny, I always wanted curly hair. But I digress: L'Oreal has two new products that I've heard are good, Glossy Curls Mousse and Glossy Curls Spray Gel. Maybe you've seen the ads with Penelope Cruz?

Now I'll open the convo up to my amazingly knowledgeable readers: What hair care products would you recommend to boost BK's curls and tame the wave?

Got this in my inbox, and thought I'd share in honor of Earth Day! Are you doing any special to celebrate?

  • Use cleaning products that aren't full of chemicals. A clean house should smell like nothing—not yucky chemicals scented like lemon or pine forest. Remember, you are inhaling all these products and the air in your house can become even more polluted than the air outside.
  • An easy one that’s often overlooked—recycle and buy recycled products!
  • Use a Kleen Kanteen or Sigg bottle for water instead of plastic bottled water. I bought a pitcher filter for drinking water at my house and I fill up my Kleen Kanteen when I leave the house.
  • Buy organic food whenever possible. It can be more expensive, so buy seasonal or go to a local farmers market. Or just buy the produce that is most important to get organic, like those where you consume the skin (i.e. berries, apples, pears, spinach and lettuces).
  • Be conscious of the products used in your beauty routine. Always look for 'paraben free' products. Victoria's Secret just came out with an incredible line of products I'm obsessed with called "Naturally Victoria's Secret." I love the Grapefruit, Lime and Mint body wash and Acai Berry and Magnolia body lotion. Another favorite is PINK Body by Victoria’s Secret which uses organic and vegan ingredients with eco-friendly packaging.

As Seen On TV: Smooth Away Hair Removal System

This is sort of a teaser post, but I just purchased Smooth Away and I had to share my excitement! Touted as "Europe's leading hair removal product," Smooth Away is a pad covered with superfine crystals that buff away unwanted hair, leaving your skin soft and smooth. When used in conjunction with Smooth Away Hair Inhibitor Moisturizer, which contains a natural botanical that slows hair growth, the Smooth Away system claims to prevent new hair growth for 6 weeks. Sounds pretty amazing, huh?!

I'm not usually a sucker for products sold on TV, but those informercials have been reeeeally tempting and I've been dying to try this product, especially since I hate shaving with a vengence. So when I saw Smooth Away work with my own two eyes at a kiosk at the New York Auto Show (I know, it's the most random place to buy a beauty product, right next to the ShamWows and 20" chrome rims), I whipped out my credit card and dropped $40 on a pack of exfolating pads and a tube of Smooth Away Hair Inhibitor Moisturizer.

The vendor told me I was getting a "great deal," and while I know they'll say anything to make a sale, I figured at least I was saving on shipping and handling costs. This set of pads is supposed to last 2 years, and twice as long if I use the natural hair inhibitor moisturizer—much less than the cost of regular shaving cream and razors. Almost sounds too good to be true!

Anyways, I'm going to test the product soon myself and I will let you know how it goes. Was I totally duped? Or will this stuff be the miracle cure to all my shaving needs? Only time will tell!

In case you've missed the informercials, you can learn more about Smooth Away at smoooothlegs.com or Getsmoothaway.com

What Are Your Top 10 Beauty Products?

Real Style Real People recently did a fun post about the top 10 best-selling beauty products according to Glamour magazine, and then asked her readers to share theirs. It got me thinking about my own list, which is constantly evolving—I like to try new things and mix it up! I've also been trending towards organic, all-natural products for things like shampoo, body wash, and lotion (working my way up to makeup on that front).

Here's my current Top 10 List, share yours in the comments:

1. Nature's Gate Tea Tree Calming Shampoo and Conditioner: Hydrating, all-natural formulas have even made my hairdresser take note. This is my favorite fragrance from the Nature's Path line, the other ones smell a tad too hippie. I get this in the "natural/organic" aisle of my local grocery store.

2. L'Occitane en Provence Honey & Lemon Foaming Jelly: I received a bottle of this as a gift, and while it has a really pungent odor, I love the color, consistency and even the fragrance. Makes me feel French.

3. Kiss My Face Olive/Aloe Natural Moisturizer (fragrance-free variety): Yes, I switched from Clinique a couple weeks ago and my skin has never looked better. (There was nothing wrong with my Clinique lotion, I was just bored and ready for a change.) I usually apply two light coats of Kiss My Face's rich formula, which takes a few seconds to be absorbed, but is in no way greasy or heavy. Love the fact that it's virtually fragrance free, and comes in a big bottle with a convenient pump dispenser.

4. Alba Sea Algae Enzyme Facial Scrub: With a fresh scent reminiscent of a high-end spa, this fine-grit facial scrub is gentle enough for every day use. You can really work this onto your skin to remove dead skin without drying it out, which is what I love about this stuff. I buy mine at Target on sale, and it's also available at Whole Foods (I think).

5. Physicians Formula Shimmer Strips Custom Bronzer, Blush & Eye Shadow in Waikiki Strip/Peachy Glow Bronzer: I have a feeling this isn't the healthiest product for my skin (which tends to get red if I rub my face after applying--oops!) but it gives my pale complexion a seriously gorgeous glow. When I use this one up, I'm going to try the Physicians Formula organic bronzer next.
