Ask BB: The Best Black Flats Under $40

I need help finding the perfect pair of really comfortable basic black or silver flats. (Comfort is key!) Hopefully, under $40. Please help! —Catherine

My absolute favorite flats are from the Gap; I currently own two different styles of their basic black leather flats and I wear them constantly (when the weather permits). I love them because they look luxe and are made from soft, genuine leather, yet cost so little! Despite the fact that they have almost no cushioning and very little arch support, I can wear them for hours without pain.

Here's your basic black flat, just $39.50:

Here's your basic silver flat (also $39.50), wear it like any neutral for day or night:

Gap has dozens of options, love those cap toe flats:

If you're certain you need a more supportive sole, check your nearest Marshalls Shoe Megashop for genuine leather flats by Me Too (as seen here) - super cute style, cushy footbeds for under $40!

I got some of the velvet City Flats from the Gap for $5.99. They are very comfortable. The sole is split allowing them to fold up and they come with a drawstring bag so you can toss them in your purse. I think I need a pair of the leather ones, now!

BB, how do the Gap flats hold up? I seem to wear through any flats I buy within a year or less. I walk a lot, but still. I would like to find a pair that can hold up for at least a couple of years.

I've had one pair for 3 seasons, the other for 2 and they are holding up really well. I think the key to prolonging their life is to always wear them with shoe insoles. I just get the cheap ones from Walmart. :-)

Me Too flats are fab! Many times, you can also find them at TJ Maxx. :-)

In my experience any flat with gathering in the back on the ankle causes chafing and blisters.
