How to Transition Summer Pieces to Fall: 3 Outfit Ideas on a Budget

How to transition your summer looks to fall with simple swaps
Every day that goes by is another day closer to the end of summer. This can be a good or bad thing, depending on how you feel about your summer wardrobe (I feel like I'm wearing everything on repeat) and how excited you are to start wearing the new fall trends. Either way, it's never too early to think about ways to stretch your summer clothes a little bit further into the season. I always feel sad putting my summer clothes away, but there are savvy ways to save them. Here are three ways to transition your favorite summer pieces into fall once the mercury begins to drop:

Look 1: Maxi Dress Blues

I looove maxi dresses. They can become such an easy staple in any wardrobe, with no need to stick them in storage once winter comes. Don’t get sad; instead keep your maxi in rotation. Cover up your shoulders with a structured jean jacket in either denim blue or versatile white. A leather moto jacket is another chic option for fall. Swap your sandals for some on-trend mules, then finish off the outfit with a long necklace to dress things up.

Jessica Simpson Mules / $35
Merona Jean Jacket / $9
Kendra Scott Necklace / $44
Mark Fischer Handbag / $47

Look 2: Tank You to Summer

What about all those tank tops? You have to have them on hot days, and the festival-inspired ones add extra pop to your wardrobe. While you may have worn your tank tops with denim cut-offs or white jeans in the summer, just switch to dark bottoms - like black or gray skinny jeans - to take your look into fall. Keep your outfit from looking unseasonal by adding a pair of ankle booties. The outfit is finished off with a cute satchel with a touch of fringe (still a hot trend for fall!).

Chaps Pants / $40
Matisse Booties / $34
TJ MAXX Satchel / $40

Look 3: Sorry to Cut You Short

Shorts are always the hardest to put away for the year, like a final good-bye to warmer weather, but can easily be adjusted to your cool-weather wardrobe by simply layering up on top. Start with your favorite bright shorts - you don't want to go drab for fall, after all. Then, to let your shorts shine, throw on a basic black tee. Cover up and keep warm with a neutral toned cardigan, and then match with a black tote. Sneak in a bit more summer with some chic matching sandals. Another option: Add some dark opaque tights under those shorts and swap your sandals for ankle boots. Your summer wardrobe is ready for fall!

JC Penney Cardigan / $48

It's hard to believe that transitioning is right around the corner! I don't think we are even going to get a summer in Chicago:(
