Name That Knock-Off: Convertible Tote

Newport News at ShopStyle

Unless you've been living under a rock for the past year, this installment of "Name that Knock-Off" should be extraordinarily easy: The copycat in question is a leather-look tote from Newport-News, which can also be worn folded over and carried with the shoulder strap. The designer arm-candy that inspired this purse is one of my favorite styles in recent fashion history for it's modern yet timeless design. So who got knocked-off? Get the answer after the jump...

Yea or Nay: Free People

Free People's tempting fashions
Free People is known for their young, eclectic, nouveau-bohemian vibe.

The same folks who bring us edgy looks from Urban Outfitters and ladylike looks from Anthropologie also bring us the gypsy-chic looks that are Free People clothing. Like Urban and Anthro, Free People delivers gloriously creative catalogs that whisk you away to distant lands and dreamy landscapes that are at once seductive, evocative and altogether too fashionable for any mere mortal to actually live out in real life. Sure, a girl can dream, but more often than not, I think their clever marketing is meant to make you cough up huge sums of cash for flimsy, fleeting clothing.

So where am I going with all this? Free People is amazing to admire, but not necessarily to buy unless it's on sale. Most of their stuff has some kind of detailing, such as lace, crochet, fringe or beading, that makes the piece unique, but tough to care for. And each item is so recognizable, it's hard to wear the same pieces over and over without getting noticed, if you know what I mean. My verdict: Free People is a "Yea" for imaginative styling, uber coolness and originality, but a big "Nay" for ridiculous pricing and overall value. Kinda ironic that this costly brand which relies so heavily on it's image is called "Free People," huh?

Luxe vs. Less: The Oversized Clutch

Oversized python clutches

I love the idea of carrying an oversized clutch, one of the hottest trends in handbags right now. Granted, they're not exactly practical. On the contrary, the oversized clutch is cumbersome and frivolous at best--and that's why we love them! Of course, we are sane enough to recognize that one shouldn't spend a lot on this trend. I'm still holding out for the perfect vintage find, but in the meantime, I saw these Mossimo oversized embossed clutches at Target a little while back, and thought they're not half bad. They come in a variety of colors and measure in at a whopping 11.5 x 2.5 x 7.5 inches. Yup, that's a whole lotta clutch for not a whole lotta cash ($16.99). The Jessica Simpson label makes a similar oversized clutch called the "Pacha," which also comes in a great range of colors, and costs $68 at Endless.com.

What do you think of the whole "oversized" clutch trend?

Currently Obsessed with Tag Pendants

Here's another oldie-but-goodie that I'm utterly obsessed with: The tag pendant necklace. It's a piece of jewelry that makes the wearer feel nostalgic, treasured and precious. I just bought this "Love" tag pendant necklace from Forever 21 and it's already joined the ranks of my "daily wears." (I like to wear the same few pieces of jewelry every day to sort of build a relationship with them...then I rotate them out after a couple months. It's more for psychological reasons than fashion, if that makes any sense). So, moving right along, you should get one too, because this tag pendant necklace is adorable, it matches everything and it looks a lot more expensive than $6. I'll admit the message is cheesy but it's too small for anyone to read anyways. Except for you, when you want a giggle.

Richard Chai for Target Now in Stores

The Richard Chai for Target collection is now available in stores and online. I apologize for not posting a review but I'm leaving for my cruise on Saturday and still have so much to do beforehand. Anyways, so far, I've heard really good things--have you bought anything yet? What do you think of the collection? Which pieces stand out, which ones should we avoid? Spare no detail, ladies, let's hear it all in the comments!
